Saluti a tutti!
New to magic (again) and old to the world (well, not THAT old unless you consider early 60's as "old"). I think a lot of us dabbled with magic tricks as kids, usually after being gifted a single trick or a small magic set. For me, add going to the library starting at the age of 6 and checking out everything I could on magic. After amazing my mom by pushing a salt shaker through the table and levitating one of my library books, I decided to enroll in my elementary school's talent show as a magician. I was booed off the stage as all the kids in the audience shouted out how I was doing my tricks (they, obviously, had all received the same magic kits at Christmas that I had got) there was one trick that gobsmacked them. It was the ONLY trick I had devised myself. After I showed them an empty cardboard cylinder I'd constructed, I pulled a rubber snake out of nowhere. Wearing a long sleeved shirt I thought it was pretty obvious how I did it. But, it was the one thing I did that both fooled and entertained. Everyone asked me how I did it (and I never told). As life goes on and magic fades away, I eventually get a degree in psychology, live in Italy for a year learning the language, go back to school, become a systems analyst, do too much sex, drugs, rock and roll, join the Navy to clean up my act (it did), meet my wife, backpack through Europe, live in Florence for 6 months, return to the US and get a degree in Library Science, move to St. Louis and raise two kids while spending around 30 years (and counting) as a university reference librarian. Fifty-six years later I'm in the midst of an ongoing existential crisis and I rediscover magic and to my great joy have found it to be one of the great calming influences in my life. I'm pretty sure I still suck, but it's a soothing suck. I'm working on a routine incorporating all things books (e.g., simple sleight of hand with quarter sized metal book charms, book tests, etc.). I'm curious if there are any librarian specific magician routines and practitioners out there. I've also been dabbling with Alexa and have actually found a way to incorporate Alexa as well as Samuel L. Jackson's voice on Alexa into a few routines. It's pretty amusing to hear Sam say, "Was your card the nine of hearts?" Just an old tin can sailor dabbling in fun. Life is good. La vita e' bella.
The universe is a big place. Perhaps the biggest.
