Hi.
So I am fairly new to mentalism, I have a few books which I am working through, starting with the classics of course, however, I was wondering peoples opinions on purchasing 'individual effects' There are a few sites I have come across that sell these, all with bold claims and sometimes incredible trailers, but I am wondering whether I will be waisting my money just buying one effect ? I hope that makes sense Thank you Kieran |

Generally speaking, I'd say you probably would be wasting your money buying a single effect. I'd personally recommend getting a basic grounding from books in principles and techniques. You could also consider, though, buying utility apparatus that can be used in multiple ways, such as a wallet (if that fits your approach), ESP cards and other cards that are not playing cards (take a look at http://www.thoughtillusions.com/ for example).

Thank you Jerskin, Perhaps it is not content that I am struggling with, it is finding the confidence to just go out and perform!!

Some individual effects are great, like Colin Mcleod recent release.

I think to go for an individual effect is totally fine. But I would recommend not to got for it because you are fooled by it or because it looked nice in the trailer. I am rather new to mentalism aswell. I have performed it since a few years, but not long ago I decided to perform it mainly. I try to think about what I want to perform, what fits my style and sometimes there is an effect that matches, or I can use it as a ‚tool‘ because I have some kind of story for it - then it won’t have much to do with the original effect in the end.

I hope that makes sense, it makes sense in my head, not that that means anything!! |

Invisible deck/ultra mental deck.
Affordable, high-impact, great as a standalone effect, great as an anytime "out", relatively easy to learn/perform. This effect got me my first paid gig by itself. https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/card-m......bicycle/ |

I'd class the ultra-mental deck as a utility tool rather than a single effect, so I'd agree that it's worth buying.

Do you want to perform close-up, stand-up or on stage?

When I started to really get into Mentalism, I bought Banachek’s PSI series videos and Richard Osterlind’s Easy to Master Mental Miracles videos. These are both wonderful learning resources for someone just starting out, as each series contains many different effects, you get to see each effect performed in front of a live audience by a polished pro, and the instruction is very good.

But realistically, as much as I would love to perform on a stage, at the moment I am thinking more smaller groups of people, more close up/street style I guess. |

In the context of somebody who is moving beyond the "performing for his dogs" stage (hilarious btw!), I think the ID could be a good effect to start working with. Many people (including myself) use it as a utility but it is marketed as an effect. And I also used to do it that way, over 20 years ago, after Scott Cram convinced me to buy it at California Magic and Novelty in (at the time) Pleasant Hill, CA. The benefit, I think, is that it is simple enough that the OP can really focus on bringing his character and performing style into it. Plus the price is right! |

I have warned Them that I am more than happy to sell the off for magic books! (I am referring to the dogs of course)! Thank you for your reply, the Invisible Deck is now on order, and seems like a good place to start! *Note* At no point where any dogs sold or traded in the purchasing of said invisible deck. I thought I had better clear that up. I can almost sense the panicked look on readers faces |

Once I watched Steve Martin on Johnny Carson perform magic for a group of dogs. It was pretty funny. He made balloon animals.
