"I may be slayed for this on here, but I finally was able to watch a video of this, and at ten minutes long, by the time it got to the ending I no longer cared."
10 minutes is ridiculously long; though if you think of it as three different things, it's less than three.5 minutes each. in any event, there are some great black-card, death-metal zarrow tutorials on youtube that you might prefer. they typically run about 2 minutes. |

I think I'll pass on the Zarrow tutorials. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Just started working on this effect, and coincidence effects in general. I have discovered two things that make the second phase much more performable, and so:
1. Once the two halves are shuffled together, I spread the resulting deck in an arc, rather than a straight line, from my left to my right. This is a wide spread, so that only the bottom 26 cards are involved. I offer the spectator on my left the choice of a card, and like Juan, I first ask her to choose which color back she'd like. I find that the arcing spread makes it much easier to get an accurate count, since the corners of the cards are separate and visible. Try it and see, it's much easier than trying to count the lines of a bar code, which is what you're doing in a tight, straight spread. 2. Once the first spectator's selection is made, and the target number is known, I have her slide the card over to the spectator on my right. I scoop up the deck, and start spreading the cards into my right hand, telling the guy on my right that he should insert that card anywhere in the spread he wants, and that he should leave the card sticking out. By then, I've counted and culled the target card, and from there, it's an easy matter to slip it in just above the first selection, once that one's inserted. This force seems to give the spectator a degree of freedom consistent with the rest of the proceedings, and the performer seems to have little to do with the outcome.

I watched Tamariz perform this. it was long and I felt my interest waning, but when the end finally came I got chills down my spine. I felt that feeling of amazement and astonishment that got me into magic when I was a kid. Juan Tamariz is a master magician.

His highness had found the beginning too long but had been taken in the crescendo of the trick. Due to that, since then, I rewrote my script to make the introductory part more thrilling when I perform it. Now Juan has such an acting capacity that he doesn't meet the same problem.

I thought I was making a mistake in the order or procedures. I did not realise it had to do with the even or odd number of cards the spectator cut to. Thanks for pointing it out. Did you find a solution for this? Thanks. |

Every time I saw this trick being performed by him on youtube, he never got the unwanted match. I think he's way too astute to not have an out or a solution or a way to prevent this unwanted match. I don't think he just leaves it to chance. |

Update: apparently Tamariz' out in case of the unwanted match, is verbal jiu-jitsu.
In this clip https://youtu.be/noH8svfkG-I?t=7m42s he's dealing cards one by one and he's saying something like: "As you can see the only coincidence in these pair of cards is the fact that they are black" and BLAM! he gets two queen of clubs He just carries on as if nothing had happened. |

Just thought that I would add: In the third phase I have begun to ask spectators to choose red or blue, I then ask them to come up with a number between 1 and 10. I then ask them to scroll along the cards and take out the specific color card at the specific number they stated. This method allows me plenty of time to glance at the corresponding red/blue card.

I have just come across this thread, and the Total Coincidence effect - wow! Having watched it on YouTube I can see how it works. So ingenious!
Here are my thoughts on the PHASE ONE problem - Whether the cut is odd or even there will ALWAYS be one extra undesirable pairing. Odd/even cut dictates whether the extra match comes BEFORE or AFTER the selected card. If it is after, it doesn't matter because you don't deal that far. Therefore if you know which it is, you can turn the piles over and deal from the faces. This will avoid revealing the anomaly. To gain this information you need to set up the initial stack accordingly. You could alternate odd and even cards without any obvious pattern. Dealing from the piles face up, is not as dramatic as from face down - but avoids the unwanted pair, which is more of a problem. |

Scott Guinn's Coincidental is a nice, one-deck version. It's in his book as well as in Mindbusters USA. And I'm not just saying that because my name appears in the write-up...
Below is some more information on Scott's version. https://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/view......c=486958 |

It can be tedious with two decks. Few have the performance ability of Tamariz to justify the trick duration. I used to perform this with one deck of cards. And I wasn't the first. You can figure out largely how to do it from staystack and end in mnemonica if you play around with it enough.
As I'm sure has been mentioned earlier, caleb wiles has a one deck, partial stack version that's quite nice (see <a href="https://www.vanishingincmagic.com/card-magic-downloads/26-factorial/">here</a>). -- https://rmaxgoodwin.com/

Two years later this continues to be one of my favorite effects, magicmaven, I’m curious to learn more about how you enter into this from “stay stack”?
