A while ago, I was exploring the various versions of coins through the table, and I came across a hidden gem: one that doesn't get a lot of press, but is extremely visual and relatively easy-to-do. I made a video to make the discussion more fun, but what are some of your favorite coins through table routines and creations? Had you heard about this one before

I find this an amusing and effective marketing approach - or educational one if you prefer.
I think that some Coins-tru-table routine should be part of every coin worker's repertoire even is they never plan on performing it publicly, just as learning C&B is essential. There are so many techniques of timing, directed focus, sound, patterns of performance and various psychological ploys in play. So, I will not share my favorite in favor of saying "any is good." I will add, however, that I created a c-t-t routine for a performer with only one hand. Different rather than "best." A borrowed pilsner glass is held under the table between his knees as coins travel through one at a time, with only his single hand covering the coins on top. We together decided that three coins was better than four for this routine. Three borrowed quarters are used in an impromptu setting. The final move is always critical to such a routine, and often follows a flow different from the earlier passes. Here, the "press through" is exactly the same as previous - a single coin covered by the empty palm. The coin is heard to clink in the glass. His displayed empty hand moves under the table to fetch the glass now holding the passed coins. I will not publish this routine as anyone performing it with two hands (faking it) would ruin its impact, but might someday (with his permission) publish the sleights, stratagems and techniques involved. No video either as this is always an impromptu presentation after strangers comment on his "loss of ability" from losing his hand. Yes, a home-made device for the glass is involved for the"drop" and carried with him always - just in case.

Interesting. Wouldn't the use of one hand be dependent on the presentation? That is, you can justify using only one hand by saying that you're going to make it harder for yourself by performing with one hand behind your back, etc. You shouldn't actually have to say that you only have one arm, right?

In your example it becomes a skill demonstration rather that creating conditions under which magic can happen. (opinion) Whether or not you "claim" or "justify" one hand, the audience knows and will question why you are playing a game with them. It is the coins going through the table under impossible conditions that is important. Making the setting "more difficult" artificially dilutes the magic by focusing on skill. What is important to this thread is that when Jim wanted an effect for his single hand that would appear "more magic than what I did with two hand" we settled on c-t-t partially because it is widely known with many observers having suspicions as to how it is done. It is more powerful because of the expectations of the audience more than the number of hands involved. This special treatment is only possible because the performer was already proficient in more standard approaches. You can't fake that.

Don’t forget absolute classics of this genre, like Slydini’s seminal coins thru table routine. Also, Al Baker...Vernon’s Kangaroo Coins...Dingle’s Int’l Conis thru Table, etc.
