Dick, that's a good tip from Flip! I put the wand under my arm enough, so that I don't have to put my hand in an awkward position when retrieving it.
I'll send on the greeting, the next time I see June. |

I had a good friend, Jack Mcmillen, who felt the same way, namely, that if the knot was going to have much impact it needed to be motivated. Here's what he did in that regard: Jack would use a handling like Mr. Grismer's initially (if I recall Ray's method correctly). that is to say he would simply pretend to thread the rope onto the ring. The subsequent release was played down completely. It was used as a gag. "Oh" he would say after apparently threading the ring, "Did I let you inspect the ring?" he would say. And with that he would casually pluck the ring off and hand it to the spectator with a smile, as if nothing special had occurred at all. Getting the ring back he would repeat THE SAME HANDLING. This time he would say, "Oh, I forgot to let you inspect the rope!" and with that he would pull the ROPE free from the ring and hand the rope out, again with an innocent smile on his face as if nothing special had occurred. All of this, strong in itself, perfectly set up the Ryan trick, as it seems to the audience at this point that there is indeed a reason for a knot. In fact at that point, they certainly need SOMETHING to assure them that the ring is really trapped on the rope. This very very simple sequence was very good theater in practice and was very strong indeed. If you try this approach, it is important for a number of reasons that you do the initial throwaway TWICE, once for the ring, once for the rope. |

Nicodemus,
I lived outside of Chicago in one of the southwest suburbs. The first time I attended Abbotts Magic Get-together in Colon, MI I met Jim Ryan. I showed him some of my sleights and he invited me to take a course that he taught in Chicago. At this course I learned the ring and rope routine and have used it ever since. Jim was a great guy and a great magician.

One of the most precious things you can have as a lifelong student of Magic are the great memories of times you have spent with GREAT Magicians, talking Magic and learning and sharing tips with each other...
Jim Ryan was "one of those guys"......a standout with an outgoing, friendly personality who enjoyed "giving" to other magicians... Having said that, I honestly believe that, more often than not, my memories of GREAT Magic Moments spent with GREAT Magicians rarely, if ever, revolve around "the latest and greatest Magic prop out there" but rather, tend to be focused more on handling tips and subtleties for "The Classics of Magic"... I have also learned over the years to NOT underestimate the value to laymen of presenting to them a polished and ENTERTAINING performance of those Classics of Magic.... In my personal opinion, using simple, everyday objects like a rope to entertain with is a BIG PLUS..... Everyone, everywhere, knows what a rope is...doing a great trick with a simple piece of ungimmicked rope that the spectators can hold in their own hands is a NEARLY PERFECT piece of Magic that they will remember for a long time. |

GRRRRREAT!
I have many fond memories of Gene DeVoe! --Probably the funniest one is the time (in the '70s)that he invited me to work with him on a showboat in St.Louis! We did a classic old gag that Karrell Fox and Duke Stern used to do at Abbott's GTG. --It got some good laughs, and I can now say that I worked a showboat!!! Gene was one of the good guys. PS Remind me to tell you about Jay Marshall's doing the old "trap door gag" on a showboat.

Rick>>> Cleaning up a pile of flotsam & jetsam on my desk, this AM, I found a sealed stamped envelope addressed to YOU. I can't remember what's in it!
I dropped it in the mail box! Are you shovelled out yet? O

I enjoyed Jim Ryan's work. I mentioned something about Jim to Lee Everhart and she said that Frank either got him started or brought him in to The Black Knight bar to work. Anybody know that history?

I have not heard that before. I suspect that Frank invited Jim to fill in for him, when Frank had a club date. I've already written up a atory of Jay Marshall doing a fill in for Frank. (I went along with Jay.)

I'm not sure! I'll check. It may be somewhere in the Café, or it may be in the upcoming book.
If it wasn't HERE, I guess I could share it here. Gimme a few days to do a search. If I can't find it, I'll tell it again, here.

After some study, even though it is published in several works, It's my opinion that the best read of Jim Ryan's Routine in in the Jay's Jinking Ring Booklet.
For those who have it, I recommend that you give it a try. |
