I was just talking about Johnny Carson a day ago, after watching him in vid with magician, Paul Gertner... And sadly heard earlier today that he died...
Anyway, thought you guys would like to know a little tidbit about this lover of magic and magicians. "...Growing up in Norfolk, Nebraska, Carson first practiced his entertainment skills on family members with card tricks and other magic acts learned from a mail-order kit. At 14, he was earning $3 a show as "The Great Carsoni," performing at his local Rotary Club..." That initial love for magic continued a lifetime as he frequently had magicians on his "Tonight Show."

I saw him live once when Amazing Randi kindly invited me to "Tonight Show". It is one of valuable memories of mine because I witnessed such a important person who loved Magic and Magicians. I thank Jonny Carson. Gomeifuku wo inorimasu.

I heard Abbott's has an old order form for a mail order magic trick from a kid from Norfolk, Nebraska. The kid was Johnny Carson.

Larry,
You forgot to add Joseph Gabriel to your list. Johnny's passing is very sad. He was a great man an did a lot for magic and magicians. He will be sadly missed, but not forgotten. Michael Berends

I am sure I am not the only one that can say with out Johnny I don't know if I would be who I am today. His influence on me as a child, watching his comedy and guest magicians, will always be a part of who I am as a person and performer. I wish Leno or Letterman had the same love for magic as he did. I have missed him for the past 13 years. There will never be another Carson.

Just an idea here... But perhaps the Café might develop a "Carsoni" Award to be given here, in Johnny Carson's memory. It could be given to a young magician doing something up and beyond the call of duty in the world of magic...There are many young magicians on this website and some kind of contest or recognition could be established, in view of Carson's start as a youthful magi and his continuing love and appreciation for the art form through his Tonight Show...I'm sure there's many ways to do this, as even maybe some of the Café bretheren here could offer the award and recogition, publicized here on the Café. Just a thought...

You forgot Burt Reynolds on your list. He sawed Johnny in half one time. Then Johnny made a joke about Joanna, his ex-wife, coming back for her half.
I remember, as a kid, staying up late at night every time Johnny had a magician on. I have lots of videoclips from his show. Wes |

Y'all forgot Otto Wessely, who worked it then got a year booking at the Hilton in Las Vegas.
And ALMOST, yours truly. I was called to work one night and was out of town, missing the shot... When I got back in town and called the producer back he said, "Where were you? When you didn't call back we called the Magic Castle for a magician and the guy they sent was awful, and Johnny said, 'I don't want to see another magic act for a year!'" ARghhhhhhhhhhhh....

There's a terrific clip on Ammar's Topit tapes of him performing on the Carson show, with other guests Billy Crystal and Arnold Schwarzenegger. Very funny.

Larry did not include Joseph in his list of Tonight Show performers. It was a brilliant performance only to be enhanced by Mr. Carson.
