I used a funny thing for the second time a few days ago. It´s a clown that changes from black and white to color when you pull him out of the frame.

Several of the kids screamed: "I have one of those!"

This has happened before, with the "Mental floss". That time it had apparently come with a Donald Duck paper.

Well, just another trick that will get "retired"... Smile

Mikael,

I am aware of the prop you are speaking about, but where did you say the kids got it from, and do you feel the same way about "retiring" an effect if the children shout out "I have seen that before"?

Just curious?

Hi,
I assume that you are Refering to the Visible magic painting invented by my friend John Breeds, several miniture forms of this trick have been given away with cornflakes here in the Uk (without Johns concent)infact I think he only ever gave Repro Magic in the UK permision to market it (it has been hugely ripped off). I will confirm that when I see him next.
I would not be to bothered about the odd person recognising it as long as your routine is good

"where did you say the kids got it from"

A donald duck magazine.

"do you feel the same way about "retiring" an effect if the children shout out "I have seen that before"?"

No. Totally different. If they have seen it before they still don´t know how it works.

If they have it at home, however...

But if half your audience have it at home, as in this case? Smile

Put it away for a couple of years. New kids come along all the time.

This, although I don't completely understand it, is well known phenomenon.

Don't worry about it. I pulled out a rope once and got the same reaction.

In one of my books on magic, it mentions comebacks for the "I know this trick" remark. From memory, the responses I liked the most were "Me too" and "Let's keep it our secret" because often that person just wants recognition. Mind you, if half your audience knows the effect you might have to mothball it for a few years.
May your fingers never lose their deftness,

May your tongue always lead them down the garden path...

With kids it's not the trick that's important, it's the interactive play and comedy props inbetween that makes the trick. I watched Silly Billy go for 10 minutes on the coloring book. Most kids saw that trick before or even own it. When you play and have a good routine, they love watching it again like all the rerun cartoons.

These days kids do watch the same video over and over. Nigel and I, told the kids that we watched E.T. (or Spy Kids I) 137 times...

.... pause

in one day.

One of the brighter kids said.

.....

uh ahhhh.

There is not enough time in the day.

Nigel said,,,,,, Uh huhhhhhhhhhh.

I have not seen Silly Billy yet but we love
the coloring book and have a few routines
depending on what show we are doing with it.
(Beware of a ventriloquist that refers to himself in the third person) LOL!

I recall "Presto", a NYC magician doing a show at a store in NY. He took out a milk pitcher and one of the kids said"I have one of those" and Presto, without missing a beat said said..."I don't think so son...this is the professional model".
That took care of the situation and he continued with the effect.

Best thoughts,

Silly Billy starts off showing the pages without color then get the kids to color them by grabbing colors from their clothes. He then ask them NOT to erase the colors. Well, the kids erase the colors while the magician keeps saying "Stop that!", "Don't do that." He does this back and forth interplay several time seeming upset every time they erase the colors after he gets them to magically color it. After about the third time, the kids are wild and erase "real hard" and erase the colors and all of the lines, so there isn't anything to color. It really plays well!

I was doing walk around with linking rings when one boy about 12 years old said "I've got those", I let him look at both of them, he could tell they were solid and then the look on his face when I linked them. He didn't figure out how I linked them.

That is a very common reaction. If I have a child say "I have that" I say "So do I" and just carry on.

It's like the "I know that" line.

My favorite is when I took out a deck of cards. I hadn't even got them out of the box when a kid said "I know that one", so I said, "I don't do that one, I do the other one" and he looked confused and didn't say anything else.

I have that one. (said by youth)

Where do you think he got it. (said by Nigel, distant voice, off stage)

I have that one. . . I have seen that before. Say ok we won't do that one. Now watch them plead with you to do it.

I had one lad once who's uncle was a hobbiest magician, the worse sort of hobbiest who after showing people stuff tells them how it's done. As I took out my one handed change bag during a routine, he promptly started explaining to all in range how it worked, because his uncle had shown him one.

I just used the old, don't forget magic is a secret, and we both know one so lets not spoil everyone elses fun by telling them it. it worked he shut up.
