Kids just say that to make them look good over their friends to make it look like thaey have everything. that's what kids want their impression to be!

Amen goes to Den. He is absolutely 100% correct. It is not the trick that kids love the most.. they love the journey that leads up to the trick so much more. It is this journey that gets them giggling, laughing, appluading and just having a good time with it.

Yes, props. are merely the tools of a good actor's/actresses repertoire. Both combined make a great magician.
"Have one of those" items I've come across have been Chinese Sticks, Finger Chopper (which relates to wrist chopper, which I wouldn't use now anyway), various magic painting routines etc. I don't get unduly worried myself, but if magic is the "flavour of the month" in toystores over Christmas etc. I guess it's unavoidable. Don't know about who invented the clown colouring routine, but I had one in a brown wooden frame years (and I mean years) ago. Made by Davenports I think. |

When I was young, I remeber getting this trick (at least a similar version) from McDonalds. Of all places!! You would pull the black and white Ronald McDonald out of the frame and he would change to colour. I remeber every kid having one.
Nowadays most basic magic sets include such effects as Proffessor's Nightmare, Svengali, Invisible Deck, thumbtips, and many other tricks. I suppose that in the future us magicians will be getting a lot more kids calling out, "I know that one!". It is all in how you handle that situation. Although your methods may be known, it is the performance that creates the magic.
Formerly, when religion was strong and science weak, men mistook magic for medicine; now, when science is strong and religion weak, men mistake medicine for magic.

I've never used visible painting but always thougt I might give it a try. I would probably do it the way the late Edwin Hooper used to do it and remove the picture from the frame under cover of a cloth, then hand it to a child. This way the transformation occurs in the child's hands and the frame can be put away and forgotton before the 'reveal'. My good friend professor shell tried it this way on my advice and says he would never use it any other way now. My guess is the kids wouldn't recognise it with the different handling.

I've come across this saying a few times. When a kid yells out, "I have that at home!" I tell him to run home and get it. Then I continue on with the trick. Or, one time this kid said that and I asked the other 30 kids, "how many people have this magic at home? Do you want to see this magic happen?" Usually, most of the kids are screaming to see the trick, which quiets the other child fast. And in this particular case, the child who originally said he had it at home, was screaming to see it with the rest of the kids!

Also keep in mind that just because a child is saying they have it at home, does not mean that is a negative statement towards you. Kids love the fact that they can relate to something an adult has. to a child, having something in common is a good thing and they are excited by it. It may not mean the child is being bad but just telling you they recognize it and that it is a fun thing to do.
In fact you may even ask that since the chikld has one at home he must be a cool junior apprentice magician. You could invite the child up to be your apprentice to use his magic with you to make the magic happen. The kid feels excited he gets to help out and you can control the situation better. just an observation and food for thought. Kyle

What I hate is when I'm doing a kids show and I pull out a prop and here from the back,"I have that one!" I look and its a competing magician! Man that bugs me!:)

Something to consider is how well you have made the prop item "yours". Are you doign the same out of the box patter that every other person who bought it does? are you doing the "stock routine" in order? or have you taken a little time to create something unique that you do with this item? If you have you can then reply along the lines of....."Aha! have you trained yours to do this?" while you do something NOT included in the original instructions.
Just a thought. Kay

I would simply say well I am so glad you have one of these. Let me show you one way to perform it. Then perform it.
I would not retire it unless it is happening every time. Put it away for a while as sometimes things that are old can later be things that are new. Patrick |

At the restaraunt where I do tablehopping, about 10% of the kids already own the D'Lites. But even those kids, when I do the passing-through-the-ears bit, the jaws drop and theyre like "Whoah!! Mine don't do THAT!!!"
Everybody wants to beleive.....we just help them along.

Invited over to a friend's house a while back, his kids pulled out their "magic kit" to show me some magic (their Dad claimed I was their inspiration )... after a bit, I showed the eleven-year-old a trick with her Svengali deck and her plastic card box...
"How did you do that???" she asked... much to the delight of her parents. If you have the same props as the kids you are performing for, you'd better have a better presentation than they have!

You can avoid the problem entirely by doing your show without standard kids props. No colouring books, no change bags, no Hippity Hoppity Rabbit, no problem.

We should compare notes Tony. Sounds like we have similar ideas. I have said before that if people actually knew what was in my show they would think I was crazy. I do have one "normal" kids show routine that I just cant dump though. And oddly enough it is one where the kids say they have seen it before (I hate it when they do not say that). And that is the reason it is in my show!
I like the advice of changing this routine around with a cloth etc to make it different. If we use what the kids "know" and then spin it around on them in a playful and fun way it makes it that much better for them. |

I'd love to know what's in his show too. I haven't managed to eliminate multiplying sponge bananas, because I love them, but nothing else in my show screams props.

Well I don't want to give away the farm because I might shoot a DVD later this year. at least that I know of nobody does a kids show like this. I could be wrong. I show up in some shorts a t shirt a baseball hat. I have 3 bic pens a box of crayons a note pad sponge balls 3 or 4 balloons and a pack of cards. I add in a few other items as well, but don't want to tip that just yet. From time to time I also put PB&J into the act but currently that is on the shelf. Sometimes if I am in the mood I bring some wands that I use for gags. We have an absolute blast for 40 minutes and then I am on my way. I wear cargo shorts so my entire act fits on my body. I walk in with my notepad in my hand and we are ready to go.
Also I thought of a really cool thing I could do with the FX Drawing board (assuming it works the way I think it does). That costs $100 though and my current show cost me about $12-15 so that is a costly item. What sort of things are in yours Tony? |
