Someone gave me one of those metal card guards that were so popular among magicians a few years ago.
It does help keep the cards from warping, and often gets a raised eyebrow from spectators as I bring it out. A nice touch. However, I'm not sure I would have bought one myself. Question: Do you use one of these? Why?

I've used one for years. It puts a little wear and tear on the box. I think it adds character to it. I always know that when I pull my cards out that they are flat and ready to go.
It does get a look from people. Usually it makes the "heckler" in the audience change his attitude. As soon as people see the guard, people seem to think differently about you. I don't know how to describe it. I never leave home without it. RDS

I use one.. but I took it to a tatoo artist and had him engrave an Ace of Spades on it.. Now it looks like it should have sold with cards to begin with.. I do use it to keep track of a stacked deck in a pocket too.. so when I need a specific deck I can grab for it.. just and idea or two!

I was thinking about getting it engraved. I just never really thought about what to put on it. A couple of my friends said to make it into a card revelation. I didn’t like that idea.
I like the Ace of Spades idea though. I still think I’m going to leave mine blank though. It gets pretty scratched from being used and carried everyday and everywhere. RDS _________________ I may not be a smart man, I’m just good at what I do.

I have one. I like the idea of getting it engraved. Maybe an Ace of Spades with "Great Scott! It's Magic!" written around it. Thanks!

What a terrific idea having it engraved!

I have a couple of close friends who swear by these devices, but I have wondered if they make people suspicious of the cards?
What has been your experience? Do the cards last longer? _________________ Be well ~ Fredrick

It does seem to keep the cards from warping.
Though I must admit, a deck of Bikes goes dead on me pretty quick.

Hi, I just thought I’d add my two cents worth. I use a card press similar to Norm Nelsen’s. Only I make my own.
I use mine only to store my cards in. Before my performance I remove them from the press that allows me to inspect them, and powder them if necessary. I don’t want the audience to think the cards I use are anything but a normal deck. Just like they use. Also the press keeps my fanning decks, and split fan decks in good order. All this is for my cards I perform with. I also use the press to keep my practice decks in good shape. Now you know why I make my own card presses... Thanks |

Hi,
Sorry guys, but I won’t use one, because, I want the deck to warp/concave, as it makes for better double lifts, double pushoffs, breaks above reversed cards to name just a few things phillip |

I agree with Kingsnqueens in a way, I don’t want people to be distracted. Also the one I use is quite a tight fit and removing the cards is not always a quick thing to do. They are good for straightening cards or a few gaffed cards/packet, but mine never leaves the house.

I like to use a fresh deck for each performance so I don't have to worry about warping or the cards lasting very long. I buy them a dozen at a time in a case at Costco wholesale club for little more than a dollar a deck. A small price to pay for a new fresh deck for each show. Just my 2 cents.

I use one, carrying a deck with me everywhere I go puts a lot of strain on the box. If I don't keep them in one of these then the box starts to come apart after only a few days, in the case I have had a deck for over two weeks with no damage to the box except some scratches from the edges of the case.
a bit expensive but it gets great reactions, when I pull it out people really take me serious. The only problem I have with it is that its rather expensive and I don't want to buy another. This means that if I buy a gaffed deck I would have to not carry around my normal one as people would be suspicious when they see me take out a deck not in my infamous case. |

I haven't invested in a card-guard yet... but I have got a very nice plastic lunchbox that I carry my decks around in! LOL
Yeah... it doesn't look very professional... but for getting around, there is nothing better - and the real advantage is that it doesn't let (damp) air get into the cards and warp them. The next stop is the card-guard for actual performances... vive la |

You could use one to add an extra level of impossibility in an ambitious card routine, or engrave the name of a card on it, then for the final phase, put the card in the middle and show not only has it gone to the top of the deck, but onto the card holder as well.

How about the Joe Porper card guard? This sells for $30 as opposed to others, that go for about $15. Is it worth twice the price? What's the difference?

In getting back to the 'Card Keepers' (the metal holders to keep cards from warping)...
Am I missing something here? I've used them to keep my cards warp free for a number of years now, but, before I do my show, I take the cards out of the device, and just take the cards with me. I've never had the cards 're-warp', while they've been out of the device for that long of a time. The audience members never even see the metal device, it's at home. To keep your card boxes from getting all scratched up, wrap a few sheets of wax paper around the box. The device will rip the wax paper, long before it does it's thing on the card box. - - Troy

I liked Tricky's idea of having a card engraved on it, or maybe just the name of the card. You could do some kind of revelation at the end with the card guard being on the table the whole time.
Just an idea... -Corey

Derren Brown does a psychological force of a card which he has engraved on a lighter. Engraving said, force card on a Card Guard would be a good way of launching in to a card routine.

I use my Card guard since the Olympics in Atlanta. I use it for the special deck of cards - special edition for the Olympics.
The cards are very proper till now. It may be that it looks more professional too. Magically yours Manipulix
