I used to own the video "The Advanced Card Magic of David Carre." Roger Crossthwaite introduces the video and narrates it for the most part. David Carre is probably more of a gambler than a magician. Technically he is excellent, doing some great passes, dealing seconds, thirds, and fourths effortlessly. Roger says that David never uses this ability when playing for real (yeah right). He looks a little like a cross between a downmarket Stephen Tucker and a bunco booth man.
If you like advanced sleights, you might like this video. The main reason Roger steers you through the video, is that although David is technically very good, he comes over as having the charisma of a plank of wood. Roger says he has spent many hours with David in smokey gambling dens, and at a guess, I would say that is exactly where David is this very minute. I haven't seen the tape for some years, so I can't give you any current info on him. |

This was among the very first tapes of card magic I bought years ago. Since then I have never heard the name David Carre mentioned again. It would be interesting to know anything of his current whereabouts.

In Rogers Thesaurus you can find a system from David Carre to set up a deck in front of the audience during other tricks. It uses different small tricks and different culls, and you can show the cards mixed till the very end. The system is practical, unfortunately it requires a lot of memorization.

He is still around, although I think recently he took a break from magic due to personal problems...
Anyway, we have him booked for a card demonstration (not a lecture) at our magic club I think in Feb or March.

Thanks, I found a tape featuring this guy and I think it's the same tape Ziatro and Gianni are referring to in their posts. Pretty nice stuff.

He is still definitely around, but has been out of magic for a few years. I recently ran in to him, he attended a lecture I was giving to the Wessex Society of Magicians in Poole. I had quite a chat with him and he said he was anxious to get back into magic. Foolishly, I did not get any contact details.

David was one of the regulars at the Malborough pub near the Circle, with Fred Robinson, Eric Mason and others. Excellent card work.

I have just bought "The Advanced Card Magic of David Carre" in a download format from L&L.
The man has skill but ... The tricks are all but good ones : complicated method with a lot of sleight of hand and the effect are sometime a little complicated too (specially the first one) The presentation is inexistent ... A demonstration of sleight of hand but it isn't magic. Mr Carre has the skill ... He can be a much better performer ... |

I know of his work from Pabular and it's excellent. Yes it is quite advanced. I can't comment on Mr. Carre's performance chops since I never saw him perform, but, the routines I've read of his are quite magical.

Maybe I'm a little harsh with Mr Carre's work but most of the tricks I saw in the video were complicated even if the execution of the sleights was good (the 2nd or 3rd deal were particulary well executed ie without tension and without changing the rytm : bravo).
@ magicfish : I wasn't expected a show but presentation is necesseary to a magic trick. Whitout it, there isn't any magic. It can even be boring ... If you construct a routine without a presentation that fits your style, you have traveled half the way. |
