All these years I've seen photos and video of EA's doing the USD jacket with a burning rope and I think to myself..."that's a poopy ending to a good idea" The EA just hangs there while someone puts it out.
Ok, lets see if this person can escape before the rope burns out...OK! they have the jacket off...the rope is stiff burning...what now ?? Here is an idea. Not only does he/she have to escape before the rope burns out, but as a new edition...they have to reach that handy, dandy kitchen fire extinguisher strapped to their leg (the kind that shoots 6 feet out) to extinguish the fire on their support rope. Now that would be a logical reason for setting the rope on fire in the first place...get the jacket off in time to be able to reach the FI on their leg....fire goes out and we have a new EA hero !! Dosen't that make more sence than having someone else put the fire out for you ?? ~Rick~ |

Both Moretti and Alan Alan leave the escape till the rope is about to split on its on accord,,,,as they transfer themselves to the decent rope or rope ladder which has been hanging within arms reach of the burning rope the drop of the rope while still burning takes some beating as a finish.
A simple gaff of the wire cored rope makes this possible but I will not go into that here. |

Yup...that is a very cool ending, I have to admit it. I bet Steve Baker could do a gangbuster burning rope escape. Knowing Steve, he'd have a loaded cannon pointing at him while dangling over a tank of water with a 30 foot great white in it while my ex. wife stands there nagging at him to get a real job so she can go to Florida ! LOL, seriously....has Mr. Escape done a burning rope jacket and is it on video ??

Rick, I saw a guy on the US TODAY show do an USD SJ escape (about 18 months ago)
Burning rope on his main line but he had a fire extinguisher hanging on another rope next to him. After he escaped the SJ, he swung over to reach the FE and then put the rope out. I got the idea he was trying to give but it didn't tickle me at all. Ian

Well, I thought it was kind of cool...that was the reason why he had to get out of the jacket and in split timing. How you doing by the way, Ian ?

Why not have a safety net underneath them. and let the rope burn til they fall into the net.

That was me. The camera folks did some cutaways at moments that interrupted the storyline, so it didn't make as much sense to a TV audience, as it did to those who were there.
In my storyline, the real problem wasn't the jacket. That was just the lead-in that people understood, like saying "once upon a time". These days, if someone sees a SJ being used in a performance situation, the underlieing assumption (whether consciously understood or not) is...this person will escape. The problem that made them squirm, was that when I reached for the other rope, it was too far away, and so there was a panic moment while I figured out that I could whip off my belt, and use it to snag the other line. For burning rope things, there are only two possibile endings, if we follow the idea through a logical sequence. One, the rope burns through. Two, the rope doesn't burn through. So any storyline that we invent for our escape, needs to end in one of those places. The rest of the routine (or any other routine) is figuring what the conversation is, that you're having with the audience. Who says what, when? Where are the punctuation marks? What kind of punctuation marks would be most effective, to meet the emotional needs of the viewers? Etc. I should also point out, that if somebody else puts out the fire, or visibly helps us in an escape, the whole emotional illusion of our superhuman ability, is just blown. While having safety people around is always a good idea, they should never be doing anything obvious, unless it's essential for the preservation of our skins.

Actually a wire could be run through the rope with a release that would allow the wire to be retracted once the EAs weight is lifted off the rope (by climbing onto a neighboring rope). The rope could then continue to burn with pieces falling to the ground, etc.
Also, applying a gel to the rope rather than a liquid lessens the running/dripping down onto the EA. Just my 2 cents.. Clyde |

That happened here in the Detroit area.
The burning liquid came down the rope and set Jason Magic on fire.... ...they had to lower him into the lake to put him out. Haven't seen ANY escape stunts around here since then..... |

Well...I'm a billet worker now, so I don't have to worry about these things...LOL!
Don...I think the net would kind of kill the effect of the escape, don't you think ?? Unless when you hit the net, they set it on fire with a bed of rusty spikes below the net...LOL! I still like my idea of the EA having to escape the jacket to extinguish the flames himself with the small FE strapped to his/her leg. ~Rick~ |

Hi Harley, Great to hear from you. I must say I did miss the lead in to the story, the TV show is aired here in Australia during the wee small hours and I just happened to be up.
Thanks for adding the part about the use of your belt. I think I have a recording of what I saw, can you please tell when it was so I can date my tape. Back in the 70's I met a guy who I remember as Mr Cash. He was telling me that he used to perform an upside down SSJ release from two burning ropes. Circa 1930 Melbourne Show (Fair) Each rope tied to each leg and set at angles approx 20 to 30 feet higher. One rope was gaffed to be safe and the other normal rope. When the one rope burnt through, Mr Cash swung like a pendulum and this let the audience know that the ropes can and do brun through. ( I think Dr Midnight has related this story before) It was interesting to see that David Copperfield had the same idea so many years latter and used three ropes (two legs? don't remeber where he tied the third) Ian

Hi Ian, I'm glad you liked it. I don't know your airdate, but the performance and original airing were on (I think) August 2, 2001.
I really like the pendulum thing you describe. That's nice theatre.

Yes, Steve Baker did do a burning rope escape on TV. He released himself from a straitjacket, further bound with a transport jacket. He sustained a shoulder injury on the first attempt and had to stop the performance. Two weeks later he attempted it again with resounding success.

Shame on who; Baker or Copperfield? Unless I'm mistaken, Baker's stunt pre-dates Copperfield's.

Hi Harley, thank you very much, the TODAY show is telecast one day late but as we are one day ahead, it works out to be about a 6 six hour difference.
