I have an inquiry and I apologize if it's dumb. Does anybody or has anybody ever used chemistry along with their magic?? My husband is a magician and my brother is a chemist and I always wondered if the two could be used together. I think it would be a great idea and I've been wondering if anyone has ever done it. I looked to see if there are any posts that address this issue and I was unable to find any. I posted here because I wasn't sure where else to go!
Thanks!!!!

I've seen chemistry magic shows before.
e.g. putting some glass type coin or object into a glass of liquid - the two had the same density so the object "disappeared" also remember another one - producing silk or some type of thread from a chemical reaction of two liquids |

Bruce Spangler in Denver uses a great deal of chemistry in his magic, including the blood for You Do Voodoo and liquid color changes that can be set up ahead of time and then timed to change when the magician wants. His son Steve Spangler does science magic on the local news, at schools and other functions.

Now to answer it... As you can see by the previous answers, chemistry has been used before in magic, but in a context of mystifying people (color changing liquids, smoke production, flash paper,...). I also know of some chemical reactions that produce heat. Those can be usefull in some illusions too! The only thing you have to keep in mind is that chemicals can be very dangerous if not used properly, or controled properly! I certainly would want to be extra carefull if doing an illusion using chemicals around children... Hope this helps! Louis Jutras :rabbitfromhat: |

Use the Café search engine:
Just type in the word "chemistry" into the box and press go. You'll be presented with links to hundreds of threads on the subject. Flames in candles, colour changes, pyrotechnics etc If you print out some leads you may be able to develop some new effects with your brother's help. |

In Bizarre Magic chemicals are quite often used. Read something from Shiels or Cameron. You will get a lot of suggestions.

I can't say I have, but I have seen some chemistry in school that could be pretty neat as magic.

I used to teach chemistry. I did a number of demonstrations that could be made to look magical, and have seen many other demonstations. Somewhere I have a Chemistry Magic/Demo manuscript from a professor from MIT. I would like to hear of more ways others have used science based principles as the heart of a trick. For a brief discussion of this, see:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......start=30 a reference someone else posted would also be of interest. http://www.fireworksnews.com/chemmagic.htm a commercial trick that your chemist-husband should be able to figure out, is called "Air has Weight" and located at http://www.elmwoodmagic.com/?nd=full&key=33 For myself, I am more interested in tricks that could be based on more general science principles(like the air has weight trick) than chemistry. The chemistry can be flashy, but the materials can be difficult to obtain, handle, and clean up afterwards. John

Tarbell has a chapter on chemical magic, although it seems a little dated

I only have one trick that uses chemical magic. I perform a trick where I ask a participant to give me the foil end of their cigarette pack or the foil from a piece of gum. I do this in a bar as a bet and I pour beer over the foil and fold it several times into a small square. I place the foil in the palm of their hand and bet them a beer that they can't hold it for thirty seconds. Usually after around ten seconds it starts to burn their hand and they drop it. Actually, the foil turns white hot. This works with a chemical reaction. I don't want to tell you the chemical because it would give away the trick. It is a favorite around the bar. I have been doing this for thirty years. No one has a clue to how it works. Most people think it's a reaction between the beer and the foil. The beer has nothing to do with it, the beer is just a diversion. I don't know of anyone doing this trick. Has anyone else ever seen this performed?

Mrmike, I have been hearing of this effect for many years but have never found the solution.
A search here at the Café for 'hot foil' turned up some answers but many say that the chemical used is highly toxic. http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......forum=37 |

Hi guys!!
I want to thank you all again for all of your help and discussion on this thread. My husband picked me up a really fun book called 'Chemical Magic' at the convention in Columbus. So far it's really cool. I look forward to reading more about this and maybe trying some of it out! Thanks again, everybody!!!
