I already own Doc Eason and Scotty York tapes. Is there any duplication of effects taught here? A review would be much appreciated.

I thought it was a great tape and was invaluable to me the 3 years I was a bartender.
I would say the business side of magic and seeing how to interact with the crowd and bits of business is what is worth buying the tape for. There are actually only 6 or 7 explanations on the tape, and a lot of them are explanations of props you need to buy. For example, Scotty York's Color Changing Knives, TONTE by Ton Onaska which Bob Sheets shows a great handling to. Hydrostatic Glass, etc. I do have to say, that this tape prepared me more for life as a bartender than it taught me magic. If you are looking to learn some cool bar tricks, get the Eason, Spill, Wagner, or York Video series. If you are serious about performing behind a bar...get this DVD then. They all give invaluable information regarding what goes on when you are not performing. For the few hours you perform, they remind you that there is the chores of lugging buckets of ice to fill up the sinks, washing glasses in between bits, the hours before hand stocking the beer coolers, cutting plenty of fruit for the whole night, lugging kegs of beer around, balancing the cash register, doing the paperwork, etc. This is where I found the most information. |

Michael, thanks for the help. I wasn't as interssted in working a bar as I was seeing these talented fellows work. Do they show them in an actual bar setting?

Sort of, but not really. They shot it in a bar at a restaurant (maybe Olive Garden) but it was shot on a Sunday morning if I remember correctly and brought people in waiting on a table.
So yes..it was shot in a bar. Was it a typical crowd you would expect to perform for in a bar? No. Especially not at 11 am in the morning. |

I was a consultant on the shooting of the Stevens "Bar Magic" tape. It was shot at a restaurant bar in Wichita and people were brought in to be "customers" at the bar. We shot it during the daytime. To shoot a tape in a real bar setting with regular customers would be very difficult for anything other that seeing crowd reaction and how the performers move and the timing on actually performing the effect - between mixing drinks and joking with the customers, certain effects might take twice as long or more to do in an actual setting. Lighting and noise levels would be very difficult under real conditions. The presence of the camera crew prevents the conditions from being real. We would had have to reshoot a performance and a explanation for any effect done under "real" conditions. It was shot under probably the best situation we could to produce a tape that would be of the best value to magicians interested in bar magic. It was a simulated bar environment. Many things one learns in a real setting would be very difficult to teach. You sort of have to learn them yourself through the experience of performing in a real situation. For instance - timing is difficult to teach - you develop it as a result of performing.
However, as has already been pointed out, this tape and the others mentioned are invaluable insofar as the information they give you on the ins and outs of performing bar magic. |

Can anybody give some information whether Scotty York's Bill in Cigarette is performed and explained in this DVD or not? Thanks for the help. Jeff
