Are there any effects that you guys know of that represents death? Something like Luke Jermays effect where a rose dies, but I need something more surefire. Thanks in advance guys.

Very large subject, can you be more specific ?
If you really want to confront people with the idea of death, you may use some ghost effetc with a old (and hopefully authentical) post-mortem picture... I have a interesting collection of those. Or a plaster death mask, ... I wrote a story/effect called "IRMA" based on one's meeting with one of the Moira. (in Legendes Urbaines.) I think it was published in american in Mary Tomich's Altar Flame. |

Wow, here's my niche. I grew up living in a funeral home, so death has always been a part of my life. Are you looking for patter related to death? If that's the case, you can take almost any effect and rework it into a death theme. For example, I've used Pyro Perception, Card Warp, B'Wave, and a bunch of other simple effects with a death theme. Just be creative and the story will come to you. One of my favorite effects I've ever done was when I was walking with a girl across campus. We were talking about how sad autumn is with all the leaves falling. The whole time she had been walking with a dead leaf. I asked for it and crumbled it into tiny flakes, rolled them into a tight ball, and squeezed it in my hand. We had just been talking about death just being a cycle in life, so it worked perfectly when I opened my hand and unrolled a lush, green leaf. I could tell it hit her pretty hard because there were absolutely no green leaves around us. Of course this required some preparation and guidance of the conversation, but the build up was very much worth it. I don't know if this is the kind of thing you're looking for, but PM me if you're interested in my themes for any of the above effects.

Have a look into the book "Life, Death & other card tricks" by Robert Neale. You can find a lot of card routines there related to death.

What are you trying to say about death, Reiks?
That it's not really the end (or is it)? That it's not something to play with (or is it)? That it's inevitable, so make the most of the time at hand? That it can be cheated? That it's a means to immortality (if you're young and already half-famous)? That it's not so bad if you're a vampire? That it's always welcome at the doorstep of your enemies? After you understand the story you want to tell and where you want to tell it, dimensionalizing it through magic becomes much simpler. Best, Neil P.S. On the subject of death-centric props, I agree with Mr. Chelman that a death mask or post-mortem photos could be very powerful (remember the Nicole Kidman film, The Others?). Evil Dan's use of remembrance cards from wakes is another brilliant idea (which he published in M-U-M several months back). Further food for morbid thoughts: obituaries, death certificates, Victorian mourning jewelry, gravesite soil, the Death card from a tarot pack (although it would hardly ever be ascribed so literal a meaning by a competent reader), and anything that can be believably inherited. P.P.S. Christian, that leaf thing sounds very pretty. NT

When I put together the Dark Museum I had this theme in mind as well (among others).
The Monkey's Paw that brought back the Dead Son...you may not want the dead to return... The Shrunken Human Head that in Death and mutilation retained the power of the original 'owner'... The Shamans Bones that can Induce a Voodoo like death state... The spectator who becomes the 'Guest Curator' attempts to control these powers from beyond the grave yet in turn is controlled by them. I think Niel you can add that to your list...That it is assumed 'there is great power in death' by many cultures. In some primitive societies there is no percieved difference between the two worlds either...one just lives across the path from the other... boooga booga :) Doug

In Victorian times as Neil described, death was embraced as a part of life and was discussed much more openly than it is today's youth-centered world. To talk about death today brings a factor of uncomfortableness that the story-magi can exploit for effect.
Christian Chelman, Eight Spades and others have barely scratched the surface with the above ideas in their posts. Wonderful subject that touches all of us. Dave |

Hi all, I didn't get a chance to read all your replies yet as I've been busy, I will do so soon. I just thought I'd clarify a bit. What Eight Spades is talking about (leaf effect) is more like what I'm after. Something where I cause something to physically die, age, combust etc. more like a reverse of Eight Spades
wonderful effect.

For some reason the torn and restored news paper just dose not seem to cut what you are looking for.
That was a pathetic joke. We can tell I don't do stand-up with my magic I hate to sound like a copycat but you have just intrested me in what I believe to be the biggest reputation maker! If you find any information please let me know, I will be checking this post daily now. If any one has any insight as to how to make an object die in his hands please do tell Also night bringer, I think we all would love to hear your patter if it is worked up yet. I know some magicians wait to see the effect before they make there patter. But some also just make it then find an effect to match it. Your friend, Mayo

Perhaps you can go against Docc's own advice and perform his Murder By Mail effect (described in The Band of the Hand manuscript). I was explaining the premise and result with my wife and she forbade me from ever performing it out of the fear of inducing real emotional harm.

While the trick behind "Murder By Mail" is in my eyes simple, the psychology can be very dangerous! Be careful!!!

Mayo, you can symbolize death.
I'll give you a little idea. It will link death and sadness. You'll have to write your own story. There are just some lines... You own different old objects from a relative: an old pocket watch and the post mortem picture of a child. Tell the story of a grand father and his lovable grand daughter. The young girl loved to play with the watch of the old man, she always said that the tictac of the pocket watch lets her think about the grand father's heart. But one day, the little girl died and it broked the old man's heart. Place the working watch on the picture and show that the tictac stops with the watch. |

That is a fantastic idea, Curator! I will work up my own patter but that would be an awesome and awing effect if presented correctly! I will start working on my presentation, when I log off. The method you are thinking of, would it work with a metronome? Just a random thought here,
" It has been quit some time ago that I had met Jean(french name) He was playing the violin, The violin called to me in the black of night, He was most inspired by the stars. I followed the sounds of the music and discovered him, awaiting him to finish I made my presence known as his metronome on the desk sounded. How ever I dare not show myself! I feared he would stop playing if he were to see me. But I did enjoy the music and wanted him to know. It is pleasing when someone admires your work enough to tell you. So in the shadows I would call, and he would play. eventually he became curious as to know my nature, who I was, who for these many weeks his playing had mesmerized. The metronome ticking as I came in, the sound which taunted me for I knew the violin would soon follow. However tonight was different for he insisted upon seeing me. I tried to warn against it, but he would not have it. As he approached the shadows he fell dead. Saddened by this I took his metronome and fled." At which point when he dies in the story is when the metronome stops. I think I may have my timing off. and I know this presentation will not fit me but I will hopefully have mine presented tomorrow. I am sorry I got way off topic, my apologies. Your friend, Mayo

I use a metronom in another effect to create stress.
Stopping an old watch is easy with a PK factor. I always hide the magnet somewhere on the table I'm working on (in another object), then I move my hand over it... I'm not sure it works with a metronom but an invisible thread may probably works better. Bind it to the hand of the metronom, let it get loose and at any moment pull on it. It should stop the metronom immediately (and you can be far from it). The pull can be purely by hand or mechanical(reel, timer...). So this was about Death and sorrow; we can try other combination... Eternity, Soul, Death as a mythological being, Vanity... |
