Johnny was a great magic fan and I remember him coming in Hollywood Magic regularly for new ideas. I was also on set with JNB both times when he did the show.
The strangest appearance on the show came from a guy most won't remember and I won't mention his name for reasons you will see. He was an odd character that came in the magic shop all the time and paid for small effects with bags of change. He also used to hang out at the Smoke House in Burbank doing magic for free. Now keep in mind he "looked" very professional but was NOT a great magician by any stretch. A lot of the talent bookers for the Tonight Show went to the Smoke House for lunch at the time and some saw him and were "fooled" that he was good. He came in the shop one day and said he was going to be on the Tonight Show in a few days and we all thought it was a joke. Well it wasn't. Her went on and did some VERY basic effects, and although competent... not really very impressive. The appearance came and went with little fanfare and is largely forgotten. He was eventually kicked out of the Castle not for exposing magic but for being exposed himself by a security camera. He got caught stealing quarters out of the pinball machine in the old Museum room back by the Palace. So THAT's where that change came from!

Once Dick Cavett and Johnny were talking on the Tonight Show about going over to the Magic Castle after the show. When the late night show aired some magicians raced over to the Castle to see the stars, but they were long gone. The show was taped in the afternoon and they were there for dinner.
