Larry, what are your feelings and views on the many "psychics" nowadays who claim to have genuine abilities, who dupe multitudes for a buck, and who obviously have not a fiber of morality in their being? I'm referring to the John Edwards and others of his ilk. There is even one who calls herself Sonja the "pet psychic" who can "communicate with pets" who have "crossed over the vale."
Have these folks' reputations tarnished the reputations of many of the good guys, including yourself, thus making the task of finding legitimate work a little more difficult? (One bad apple....)

Personally I find that sort of thing as being contempable. I am opposed to the so-called genuine psychic who think nothing a dispensing advice and taking people's money. That's criminal. L.

"Good evening Ladies, Good evening Misses, Good evening Sirs. All that you will see this evening is entirely faked. I don't have any capacity and the thought transference is like the conjurer who draws a rabbit from his hat. No dreams only technique!"

I thought the headline "Fake Psychics" was quite redundant in the first place.

No redundancy intended. I was just refering to those who call them self psychics but who steal from the unaware as "fakes", while we who do this for entertainment and with honest admission of our lack of genuine powers are certainly NOT fakes. We are honest entertainers. We are indeed quite genuine.

Kreskin claims psychic powers. So do other mentalists. I think the difference must be seen in what they do versus what the "fake psychics" do - the "fake" dispense advice or relay so called personal messages from a dead loved one. The only true psychic I know of who truly had mental powers was Peter Hurkos. But he did not dispense advice, he helped law enforcement solve crimes. The mentalists entertain or "read" minds as it pertains to a word or card or general subject. Big difference. But, there is nothing wrong with us as mentalists claiming to have special abilities or powers.

I suppose the botom line here is whether or not one actually takes advantage of others.

And the definition of what "taking advantage of" means. When I perform, I use any and every means available to me to amaze and entertain my audience, as any good performer in this field should, I would think.
But, as I am also a hypnotherapist, people come to me for help with all sorts of things and, sometimes, they simply refuse to hear something that I, or any other therapist, would say that they need to hear. But when I am wearing my "psychic's hat" for want of a better term, they will listen raptly and actually act on the advice that I offer. I get paid for counselling, hypnotherapy and as a psychic entertainer. So, the question that sits out there would be - am I taking advantage - or am I taking an UNFAIR advantage and bilking these people out of their hard-earned money ... even if they get the positive results and personal growth that had eluded them for so long prior to their sessions with me? I do not advertise as being a psychic counsellor and only use this ploy when a client comes to me with the idea that this is the only way that they believe that they can be helped, obviously. The line is often not so clear as I see it, and, if someone is paying for a counselling session for personal growth and self improvement and nothing else has worked to get the message across, well ..... I have to believe that, for me, the ends justify the means as they are there for counselling, they are getting it and it is really based on my professional training as a therapist, not as a psychic. I'm up front about being a therapist, but if someone has seen one of my shows and happens to believe, is it right to thwart their success by saying "it's all a cheat and illusion?" That which we call a rose would smell as sweet and an intervention that works to the benefit of the client when nothing else has worked is still a successful intervention, isn't it? And they do come for legitimate therapeutic work, so the modality that I use is always predicated on what they present during the sessions. Even Milton H. Erickson was known to do this with resistant patients, so I feel that there IS a precedent, but one has to walk that path very carefully. Of course, if someone is doing this and bilking people out of their life savings or starting a cult that is of a damaging nature, then I stand firmly opposed. In fact, I am doing a lecture at a neo-pagan conference in detroit in a couple of weeks on just that issue... Your mileage may vary, but, in a consultative position with a person who is really hurting about something, isn't it the therapist's responsibility to do any and everything possible to help? Honest question - no flames implied or intended. Respectfully, Lee Darrow, C.H.

Yes, Lee, but isn't that in a private environs? You don't claim psychic ability when a patient comes to see you, do you? I would find that fraudulent.

Great post Lee.
I agree with the fact that the line is blurry, to say the least. Maybe that’s the way that line should be. Many of the worst historical tragedies has to do with people or groups trying to force clarity in the subjective realm of beliefs. |
