Here is a mathematical trick that I love doing:
I am going to ask some mathematical problems, not hard ones, and I would just like you to tell me the answer out loud as fast as you can. Ok, here we go. 2 + 2 (they should say 4) 4 + 4 (they should say 8) 8 + 8 (they should say 16) 16 + 16 (they should say 32) NOW QUICK! Think of a number between 5 and 10, but don't tell me. Got it? Your number is... 7! How this works: I don't know. The majority of the people that I have met say 7. The second most said number is 6. Have fun!

No need to do:
2 + 2 (they should say 4) 4 + 4 (they should say 8) 8 + 8 (they should say 16) 16 + 16 (they should say 32) Only ask: "think a number between 1 and 10", and in most of the case, it will be 7. Try ! |

It is not really a save one...
Last time someone answered to the question "think a number between 1 and 10?" "pi"... Was not prepared for that one Keep in mind: Never do this for mathematics-students

Haha.. I also thought 7.
I once saw a magician do a mentalism trick where he talked some patter... blah blah and ask someone to name a vegatable and some other number stuff. He had 'carrot' written down and the number 3 and that was what the spectator was thinking. But everytime I did the same trick, no-one ever in 10 goes had said carrot. Pity. |

A better one is to ask someone to think of a number between 1-50. Both digits in the number must be different, and both digits must be odd. Survey says:
37. If you didn't think of 37, then you are probably thinking of 35. |

I used the 35 or 37 trick when I was training a bunch of new teachers in my district and did a "mind reading trick." It was quite a stunning finish, even for me, and something that got mentioned in my evaluations.

7 is the most popular number between 1 and 10. Nothing more. Since childhood, math, philosophy, mysteries, it's just a matter of "top of mind".

Hi TommyTheTremendous,
I tried your trick recently with some of my spectators, and it missed several times. Only 1 out of 8 tries was a success (thats worse than natural probability!). Maybe in europe (or especially in austria?) peaple have other favourite numbers ;-(( But I also tried tencardsdown's feat (number between 1 and 50), and never failed! World is an interesting place... |

Why not ask for a "LUCKY number" between 1 and 10?

Here's a routine I've used for years.
Take a piece of paper, and write down the number 35, you can do this beforehand, or in front of the audience, just do it casually without them being aware that you are writing something down. Say to the spectator "Think of any number between 1 and 50, make both digits odd, and different from each other". Push them a little bit, don't let them think too long. "Have you got it"? In front of them, write down your prediction, write down 39. Then say "I don't think I am correct, and I am going to change my mind", and cross out the 39 you just wrote. Then write down 37. So now, your paper has 37, 35, and 39 written on it, with the 39 crossed out. Ask them their number. Chances are good that it will be 37. If so, hold your thumb over the 35, turn it around and show them you are correct. If they say 35, cover the 37 with your thumb, and show them the 35. If they say 39, cover either the 37, or 35, and show them that you first thought of 39, but changed your mind, and offer to try it again. This time, ask them to think of any number between 1 and 50, making both digits even and different from each other. Write down 68. The success rate is extremely good at the spectator thinking of 37, if not, 68 almost always is picked. Jason
Question every rule.
There are no absolutes. |

In "The Himber Wallet Book," Harry Lorayne has a version of the "think of a number between 1 and 50" thing that uses the Himber wallet for multiple outs in a way that is reminiscent of MR2Guy's approach.

Jason,
I had picked 39 the first time. But in your example 68 is not between 1 and 50. - Brian Nadworny

Parson,
Thanks. As they say... There are 3 kinds of people in this world... Those that can count... and those that can't. I have tested this on my family and it seems to work pretty well. Now I just have to put it into my act. - Brian

Nonrelavent.
if ur asked to pick a number between 1 and 10 pick seven cuz it's the most thought of and then if they pick 8,9 or 10 you have controll of 1 through 7 and if they pick 1 through 6 then you have controll of 7-10. |
