For those of you who dress really fancy and formal for your shows (like myself), I was curious if you ever wear gloves? And if you do, do you also perform in them? Are they black or white? I have a full tux, plus hat, cane, etc. I just haven't ever gotten gloves because I thought that they would get in the way of performing.

The most famous glove-wearing magician had to be Cardini, who did precision sleight-of-hand in white gloves.

I used to do a manip act with color changing gloves and now I wear gloves for my ring routine. They help the rings glide more smoothly through my hands. I agree with Dr. Stephen, watch Cardini's act if you can find a recording. His manipulations with gloves are amazing. I think Dan Sperry has recently added some card manipulation in black gloves to his routine.

Tommy,
Entertainers are allowed to wear costumes as part of the act. Costumes give a lot of latitude. However, if you do indeed go formal, remember that the gloves and the color of the gloves are significant. Both white and gray have their places that are appropriate and inappropriate. Don't embarrass you host. True formal dress gives little latitude. Don't let recording artists and actors be you role models there. Their "formal" dress is a joke to those who have more class and know the finer points of formal dress. Go to the library or find a real formal dress pro to help you. (That is not usually the sales clerk at the rental shop!) (Yes, a silver tux is a costume and not formal dress. I perform in real formal dress at formal occasions. White tie is not a costume. Black tie is the short coat and is slightly less rigid in terms of "Do's and Never Do's". When in doubt, go formal.) Good luck with your act! Bob Magic By Sander |

I have got some crappy white cotton gloves from a dollar store and have been practicing with them on. I really want to do that cardini effect where he takes off his gloves and then produced a fan or something. Plus it would give some room for error due to the white of gloves and white boarders of cards.

I've been doing the card and glove manip thing since I was 14 when I saw cardini do it on an old tape. If you dig in some of the old books they'll tell you how to do it, its hard, but when done nicely look totally killer. I'll be the first to admit I've gotten lazy in my presentation of it lately these last few years and are workign them out of the routine, but when done well they can be very very cool

I have several pairs of white gloves and a couple pairs of black gloves for different acts. I do the burning gloves, I have both a pair of white and a pair of black for this one. I also do the gag where you take the glove of several times used by Davide Costi in his manipulation act.

Hiya guys,
I am typing this with pins and needles in my foot so bare with me. I am a female stage magicians (children's entertainer mainly), have done some close-up, I have small hands and I was given some cool white gloves that look great adn I thought I could wear them for my act- even if it was not for the children too, anyway I put them on and they are a bit big!!!!!!! which is a pain as for some tricks I would not be able to perform due to the finger tips being big. I have to say I am not sure if the white gloves would suit a female, what do you guys think? Plus I do not wear a black suit or black hat.....I wear bright clothes... and another costume I wear is a smart velverty top - adults more I wear that for/evening shows.. Thanks, Kind Regards, Belinda

No offense, but I couldn't see those gloves matching, just cause you don't wear black. I personally think it wouldn't go well with just bright colored clothes

Since this is a discussion on the entertaining use of gloves, I suggest that you catch Mike Caveney's act sometime. He wears gloves with a hounds' tooth pattern to his advantage. It is very effective. Give it a look! Great Act!

I have become quite good at preforming manipulations in white gloves now. Actually when I preform a split fan wearing them it is a lot smoother and the cards back palm easier and aline more easily.

Correct me if I'm wrong ive seen old pictures of cardini, did he use leather gloves?
PERFORM MAGIC AND NOT "PUZZLES" so the audience wont try to "figure out how its done".
