Some very good effects in this book.

Great handling of "card warp" and even some original work on the pass.

Recommended book as long as you're not a beginner.

I agree- it is Bruce's best book. Full of material that Bruce Cervon has made his living from.

The "Ultra Cervon" tapes (L&L) are oustanding as well . . . strong magic, well shot, clearly explained.

His "Matter of Psychology" is very, very easy and very, very strong.

BTW, I just had the pleasure of visiting the Magic Castle while in LA. While I was there...I passed a room where Cervon and Milt Larsen were interviewing a fellow for a job at the Castle. Wow...took a lot of self-restraint to avoid barging in, and saying, "just wanted to say thank you." But I did...ahhh...my near-brush with greatness! Smile
Cheers,
Steve

Cervon has some great touches on the pass but it depends what you are looking for. Ig you wanna improve your pass, go with Ouellets 'The Pass', or Kaufmans On the Pass.

Anyone using cervons "free turn pass"?

I've read it, but haven't tried to put it into use yet and was wondering how others would rate it.

I recorded a short clip of it here: http://www.zahlenschelme.de/denis/
(It is also used in the "How to loose the top card..."-clip, perhaps I got it better there?!)
It might be a handy pass to transfer a small stock from bottom to the top where a classic pass is sometimes a little awkward.

Dennis, Some great clips you have there!

The free turn pass looks extremely deceptive in those clips, though probably beter in the "how to lose a card" clip. You've convinced me to give it a go.

Isn't this the book where Bruce states in the beginning of the book that he does not grant you permission to perform these effects in public?
I remember seeing this condition posted in the book years ago and passed on the purchase. It annoyed me to read this as I feel if you are publishing the material, you are giving the magic community the effects for their use. Don't tell me I can read and practice the material, but just don't perform it.

Actually, he reserves performance rights for national/syndicated TV, video, lectures, and when you are appearing on the same bill as he is. I don't think that's too much to ask--he doesn't want you to do his material on a National TV special, he doesn't want you to put out a video/DVD with his stuff on it, he doesn't want you to teach his stuff at lectures, and he wants to be able to do his own material when other acts are performing.

Besides, how often do most of us find ourselves in these scenarios? The fuss about this was much ado about nothing IMO.

It's an excellent book, and not many have bothered to check it out, which means you'll be doing stuff the other guys don't do. Well worth a spot on your bookshelf.

Agreed. Bruce long ago backed away from even those restrictions, which have no particular merit anyway. It is an excellent book.

I like Bruce Cervon's work. Just don't buy the video or you'll fall asleep in five minutes.

I was involved in the production of this book, and reviewed it for Genii. I can tell you that it is the highest quality material you are likelty to find. Real world working material from a guy who makes his living, and has done, from magic for decades. Warp 2 is a thing of beauty, his cut and restored rope is brilliant, his version of the Conus Aces is a laugh riot and extremely magical, and that's just my favorite three effects.

Bruce gives you a really practical handling for Ring Flight, a new pass that Vernon agreed was the first truly innovative work on the pass in years, Bruce's handling of the Koran effect with multiple climaxes (cut and restored silk, cigarette and lighter production, followed by a glass of wine) that, although not new, is novel and finally worked out for practical performance. There are many other effects, some truly great card material, but I'm not going to do a table of contents here. Is this book worth buying? Well, in my opinion, it is one of the books no closeup/standup performer can afford to be without. High marks, one of my favorite tomes, and if you know me, you know it takes a lot to get that kind of review.

I bought the video and I fell asleep in 5 mintues.
Then I reviewed it again, and I liked it more.

Often, it's important to not follow the hype with regards to the videos. There are some great thinkers that just don't have a great TV presence. Makes you think deeper about your own performance ideas.

John Bannon's videos are also boring but great stuff.
David Roth's videos are b zzzzzzzzzzZZZZZ.
Oops. Sorry, I fell asleep just thinking about those videos. But I would never part with them.

Like Frank said, good magic but boring videos. I guess to be more amazed by the magic it has to be in person and or their accual show.

Actually I love the Ultra Cervon tapes very much (not as much as the book of course Smile ). I particularly liked that he does not talk all the time. While I do like to watch a Malone or Greg Wilson I also enjoy a somewhat quieter and less hectic way of performance.
And I laughed about a lot of situations and gags in Ultra Cervon but maybe I have a strange humor...
