As EA's, we all collect cuffs, L/I's, P.locks, etc. How do you display your toys ? I bought a tall book case from Wal*Mart, left the shelves out, screwed a small block of wood into each corner, cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to the exact inside measurement of the case, covered it with red velvet and droped it into the bookcase.
The plywood rested on the corner blocks and I screwed them in and then I arranged all of the cuffs and L/I and covered the front with a piece of glass which was held in with those thingies that hold mirrors up. I had my antique cuffs in one case and the modern cuffs from around the world in a seperate case. NOW>>> What is/was the the best, all time, run your tongue across it cuff or L/I you own or have owned? Mine was one of the original "Champion Lock Cuffs" owned by H.H. himself. My second best was a pair of figure 8's that nobody in the collector world had ever seen before...they were flat ! ~Rick~ |

Most of my stuff is in two suitcases.
I do have a light display board with several unusual cuffs that I take with me busking, to draw a crowd. Steve

I display mine in four cases, each 4 feet x 4 feet. They fold up the middle and have handles so that I can take them to shows. I have to make two more cases to handle the cuffs I've acquired recently but haven't had time.
As to my best piece- has to be some slave shackles I picked up from Israel. Very old, very heavy, very ominous. I'll add a question, if I may Rick, what is the one piece you'd most hope to acquire. For me its a pair of those giant beans you were showing Rick. I have a lot of cuffs and they vary greatly but I want to be moving toward more of the rare cuffs such as Stotz, berliners, cummings, adams, giant beans. I also have Chubb escorts and Saf-Loks on my wish list. Gee, think its too early to send a list to Santa? Ya, you're right. Clyde |

How about doing a eng bottle theme, maybe for handcuffs, just alter them before you get themin and out, suspend them somehow so that they hang,
have fun, also if you have a pair that you don't use that offen trhen put them in a bottle, and then put a deck in with them (if you can) and pierce the deck with the cuffs! j55 |

Well...you guys are going to laugh, but my "wish cuff' is a set of absolute mint condition Towers double lockig cuffs in the original box. That and the Tower 3 handed cuffs. I'm a man of simple taste !

Well, I store my cuffs in engineers cabinets, but I don't display them. My son and daughter live with us at home, and they can do without explaining to their friends why there are so many pairs of cuffs around the house
Rick asked about all time favourite cuffs . . . well I have most of 'em, but my favourite cuffs are the Pinkertons! But, I also treasure the Hiatt's Darby leg irons that belonged to David DeVal, and Ian McColl's Mirror Cuffs . . OK ,they are repros, but beautifully made and very useful to me in my lecture. Thanks Ian! Riley |

I paid $50 for my towers which are pretty close to mint but I didn't get the box, just the original key. Found them at an antique store. Actually now that I think of it, I was TOLD about them by a locksmith. He had a pair of H&Rs in a display case and I wanted to see if he'd sell them. He said no, but he know of a strange pair of cuffs that were for sale elsewhere. The towers were my first pair of vintage cuffs, I've had them for quite a while.

Riley...don't be fooled, some repro cuffs are worth more than the originals...especially Ian McColl's stuff...in years down the road ?? Oh yes.

My faves include a set of slave shackles that have the scroll-work on the bows, and a one-of-a-kind cuff made by Ian McColl (based on one of his original patterns), which I call the McColl-Branxin; he calls the Mollett-Branxin.
Who was Branxin? That's an inside-joke for those who have seen the 1972 TV-movie (unsold pilot) "Escape." Steve

I really should get around to making a display for some of the nicer cuffs I have, keeping them in a plastic tub under the dresser just seems like I'm hiding them and collections should be seen. My favorites are the Cummings cuffs, as I have handled more pairs of them than any other old time cuffs

If you are to display the cuffs then I guess a good insurance policy is a must. As Don says, some cuffs are very expensive. How would you go about making sure your cuffs are adequately covered? Will a run of the mill insurance company do, or are there specific companies that specialise in insuring unusual things like handcuffs?

There might be places that will insure the cuffs. but I have known collectors to go without insurance as well. and not just handcuffs.
