I am looking for video tapes of the Masked magician programs, "Breaking the Magician's Code." that ran on Fox TV. Does anyone here know where I may acquire these?

Why, do you want to burn them???
That's all they are good for.

Once when I needed a video for a project I called the tv company (ie: FOX) and asked if they could send me a recording because I 'missed' the show. The said I should send a self addressed envelope to the address with money for postage inside.
It arrived 1 week later. Just an idea for you! |

Seriously, the tapes are very good for burning. If you chop them into one inch thick peices before burning, you can use it for kindling.

I own a video store, and I would never even consider renting any of my magic dvds or video's! Are you crazy! Hey what blockbuster was it? And what city, and state? We should all call and complain to the store manager, and threaten to blackball them! Or rent them, and return the charred remains of the masked magicians tapes in the night drop box! don't forget to rewind before setting it on fire! Lol!
Sorry I don't mean to seem so bitter, but the Masked Magician destroyed the Art of magic for personal gain & pleasure! (Valentino is a schmuck!) Not to mention all the hecklers he gave birth too.

As much as I hate magic exposure, you can find out more about the principals of magic at the local library than you could with his shows. Old methods, some innaccurately explained, I mean really. Just for fun, I ran a survey about a month after his first special aired where I do restaurant magic. I handed out over 200 little forms, and only 13 people even saw it. Of those, only 4 could actually remember one of the effects well enough to describe one and the principals used. After the 4th special, I tried again, and only found 10 people who even knew there was more than 1 special. I was initially furious when I found out about the show. But after watching them, and getting a pretty good feel of their effect on the public, I say just forget about them like the rest of the country did.
If you want to get mad about exposure, start hunting down all the Blaniacs with the exposure websites and do a little Jay & Silent Bob on their butts! Bottom line, never forget that people really DON"T want to know how magic works. So even if they are exposed to a method without seeking the answer out, they will forget it a week later anyway. Magic has survived for over 5,000 years. Some loser in a mask with IRS troubles isn't going to destroy it with 50 specials! |

50 Specials was it really that much? I still know people who are having bad comments from audience members because of the masked magician.

No..Five. Six if you counted the street magic one. And you can't call seven, because Diagnosis Murder was a rehash of the first few.
As far as tapes go, I have VCDs from Malaysia, but only eps 1-3...And only one works. I never got 4, I rewound and watched the crap out of Trash TV, and CBS never made good on their promise to get me a new one. *is having flashbacks...GTG* |

You could probably just look on ebay, I found a copy there when I accidentally recorded over another magicians tape.

I cant figure out why anyone in their right mind would want the masked magicians videos. The guy isn't entertaining, he most certainly isn't original. What are you hoping to benefit from the masked magicians tapes?
Do yourselves a favor, And buy a real magicians video's like...Jeff McBride, Lossander, Michael Ammar, Michael Skinner, Etc. There is so much great material available now, its not even funny. Seriously!

If you must:
Look here. I don't particularly like the idea of this show, but I don't think it did any damage to the art of magic. A lot of the time, this guy was guessing as to how things were done. Only some of his revelations were completely accurate. People have been trying to expose magic's secrets for years. Infact, they still are and always will. This is not to say that it will destroy the art of magic. If anything, maybe it will keep magicians on their toes. In all honesty, I'm quite sick of seeing magicians saw their assistants in half. Isn't it time we really started thinking outside the box with the hidden tray at the bottom of it? Let's see some new stuff! Besides, if the performer is good enough, and has sufficient skills in misdirection and showmanship, no amount of exposure can damage his act. Cheers, Chris PS. These thoughts are in no way meant to attack anybody on the board. From the interaction I've had with the forum members so far, I've found them all to be intelligent and creative people. There's some really clever people on this board, and the passion that we all have for this wonderful art is clearly evident. |

Jon,
Those tapes are not a good choice I have all and I'm planning to recycle those. Just my opinion |

When it first appeared, I was mad as most of you guys here. I even gave away my copies.
But projects came in and I became more mature, I also began to seek the videos for reference and brainstorming possibilities. (I got 2 and 3 from a non-magician doctor friend, whom I got influenced; he does not perform but respects the art) I see Magic now as an Effect that needs a solution (reverse engineering) but you must learn as many principles as you can and eventually create your own. |

The other day I was in FYE (chain of entertainment stores) and sure enough they had the video in the link in MagicTopher's post. Only difference is that the few copies they had left were on sale for $1.99. Marked down from $20, I guess nobody in Rochester was interested in these.
Evan P.S. - Since the tape exposed zig-zag, metamorph, linking rings, etc. I cleared took the last few copies and "recycled them" (I hadn't used my sludge hammer in a while anyway ). |

Dear friends,...the masked magician did cause a major harm to the magical industry in my opinion.......
once I was negotiating with a model to work with me in a permenant basis,,and she went on to say she couldn't because she thought my magic work is going to come to an end as she was following the fox specials! she said the magicians have no future after the exposure.. may be the tycoons will survive but for ordinary magicians its a dead end! Personally, though I think the laymen didn't learn much from fox specials, but now they think they know how its all done,..in a way this has killed the aura of mysteriousness around magic that had been there for the past many millenniums,,,its soo sad! |
