Isn't it going to open in theaters in May or June?
During the previews I saw they play "It's The End of the World As We Know it" by R E M and then the Planet blows up. |

Is "Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe" any relation to the classic Douglas Adams work, "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"?
;) In the American version of the trailer, they play "What a Wonderful World" before the planet blows up. BTW, for people who don't know the story, we're not giving anything away. Earth blows up very early on in the story. |

I assum it must be. It isn't the first one, though.

I think I have it confused with Chicken Little. They played both trailers at a recent movie.

Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy opens June 3, 2005, at a theater near you. How do I know where you live?

I have my towel in spot so I always know where it is. I will bring my towel to the screening. I suggest you do the same.

Thanks for the towel reminder, Doug! Along the same line, don't forget your babel fish - you wouldn't want to miss the subtle nuances of a well-read Vogon poem now, would you?

I speak fluid Vogon...had to learn after that stupid babel translator on the internet misquoted me and my name is now logged on the wall of THE restaurant with a black and white tin type picture and in seventy two zatorillion languages: "MOST WANTED".
I tried to correct it but every time I hit the enter button, I fell through the floor and wound up in Atlanta. Doug

I will most likely just stay home and watch my DVD of the original BBC series instead of going to see the Big Screen Version. It more than likely will be awful (as nearly all American remakes are). Since Disney is doing it it will undoubtedly be sanitized beyond all recognition and since it is being made for an American audience the subtle wit will most likely be replaced with scatological jokes.
After hearing about what we did to Red Dwarf have very little hope of Hitchhikers serving the translation from the British to American.

Well, since the original BBC was also pretty awful and bland compared to the printed matter, there is no hope but to READ the books again.
However some research is in order to see WHO is doing the film and how much budget there is behind it etc. After all Disney and Bruckhiemer hit a HUGE homerun with Pirates Of The Caribbean and I thought that was going to be Bantha Poodoo. Yet...again...the books slammed it home on so many levels, including 'subtle' that you may be right...of course I thought the same thing about LOTR and was wrong...though I still have my fingers crossed on King Kong. Hmmm, I always did like the books rather than the series on TV.
What is at the beginning of eternity, the end of time and the start of every ending?

Agreed the books of course are superior to the original TV series (at least the first two anyway) but I do have a soft spot in my heart for the BBC production and have watched it many, many times: to the annoyance of my wife (but at least in her eyes it keeps me from showing her card tricks).
I don't see how you could cram the whole story into a two hour movie without completely destroying it. Granted I heard that the writer of Chicken Run reworked Douglas Adams original script and that John Malkevich (sp?) is in it so perhaps there is a glimmer of hope but I'm not holding my breath. Perhaps they'll continue with the conversion of video games into movies and make Starship Titanic into a film, or better yet the durk Gently Books.

I don't think that the American B.S.--Big Screen, that is ;-)--version will win a Rory Award, but it is in my list of "must see in the theatre" movies. Hopefully, Star Wars and the other impending blockbuster releases won't delay its release.
I also need to pick up Neil Gaiman's book on Douglas Adams sometime soon. Anything by Gaiman is worth a read, and you can't go wrong w/ the subject. Don't Panic! handa |

Well just got back from seeing it, well saw it Friday night and only now have I recovered enough to sit down and write a review.
All I can say is that it almost lived up to my expectation. It sucked. They managed to suck all the life humour and motivation out of it. They turned what originally was a buddy picture into a love story. As soon as Trillian gets on the screen ford just seems to fade away. I enjoyed it about half way through and then suddenly it veered left and went off in search of new, uncharted territory. This in combination with a silly Deux Machina ending brought the whole picture to a completely unsatisfying end. I had extremely low expectations for this pic and it managed to live up to any of them. I'm only glad Mr. Adams wasn't around to see this monstrosity

For those of you who are old enough to remember what a "text adventure" was, the original Infocom game of Hitchhikers's Guide to the Galaxy can be downloaded here :
http://www.the-underdogs.org/game.php?id=3486 Douglas Adams had a hand in creating the game and it is very funny, in addition to being very difficult. You may require peril-sensitive sunglasses to play it. Cheers, Nosher
