Maybe so, but I agree with the sentiment. I see Blaine come on the TV, I change channels. I can't stand him as an individual, so it stands to reason I won't watch what he does. You want to call it stupid, that's your choice. I call it having good taste.

I do not care for David Blaine because of....well.....David Blaine. His tricks can be learned through books or bought at stores, so I never say I dislike the trick because I dislike the performer. The "Heart From Stomach" trick itself, I think, is stupid. Probably the only reason I say this is because my mom is a nurse and my family in general is smart.....well, I shouldn't say that. We are very technical and pay attention to every little detail (which is a good thing for me doing magic because they catch EVERYTHING! lol). The ribs and the lungs, not to mention the arteries and other veins that are attached to the heart, would kind of make the trick impossible. Even IF he had somehow grabbed his real heart, he would die since there would be nothing to pump his blood.
The same can go for a mathematician. If you do a card trick that requires counting cards or algebra, there is a chance that the mathematician will figure out the algebra part of the trick (or the whole trick if it is all about the math). All in all, I don't like David Blaine because of his dumb stunts and how he presents the tricks. I don't discredit the tricks themselves unless the tricks are as phony as can be IMHO. This is not to bash anyone, but just stating my opinion on both Blaine and the trick. I do respect all your guys' opinions and I find it interesting to see how other people look at things.

Fine. You are entitled to that. But to say everything he does is stupid because he is the one doing it...well, then Paul Harris creates stupid tricks...remember, Blaine has done quite a few Harris tricks on his specials. Do you think Paul Harris is stupid too? |

POint taken. I'll take (a), thank you. And, I think Harris is super. But, I still think the heart "trick" was stupid.

It always amazes me when I read magicians in this forum talking about David Blaine and making comments like, "...that's why he's on t.v. and we're here". Where, exactly, is "here"?. The term is always used in such a derogatory sense, as if to say that magicians who have not had the breaks that Mr. Blaine has had are somehow beneath him.
I respect Mr. Blaine's accomplishments an certainly admire his sleight of hand skills...he is definitely not the completely untalented magician that many in our field make him out to be for some reason but, let's face it, anyone who is familiar with his backround must admit that he has had the same breaks that most entertainers who end up on television have had. I believe one of his parents is a casting agent and he grew up with Leonardo DiCaprio. I'm sure that everyone who posts here has at one time or another seen a really bad magician perform on television. How did he ge there??? Do we automatically ignore the fact that his/her performance was terrible just because this person somehow managed to get on television?? Magic aside, we must not allow ourselves to be brainwashed by the medium into thinking that because something is on the stupid box it is automatically good. Again, I applaud Mr. Blaine's accomplishments and believe that, all quibbling about how he got to where he is aside, he has done a lot to fuel the renewed interest in our art. I have several friends who are actors and they are constantly telling me that the parts that they get come more often from unexpected breaks than from their auditions. One man's opinion |

I don't think I will ever forget the look on the host's face - PRICELESS!
Did you notice the shot showing the entire platform/stage near the end of the trick? The host had got up out of his chair to move farther away from what was happening! It really messed with him. Just watched it again and it still cracked me up.
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Wake up, guys...it was part of the act!!! Like Houdini, Blaine is a better showman than a magician.
Gotta love this guy!!! |

I just can't get over how Carson Daly criticized Copperfield for doing the Tornado of Fire and no one was allowed to watch...and Blaine's stuff is more believable...Hello? Maybe because there was FIRE involved...And then he makes this stupid scared look on his face when Blaine did his heart gag...If he's going to make fun of Copperfield, why did he host the show in the first place??
Just my thoughts.. |

I thought the clip was great. Just because something is impossible means it would make a bad trick? What the heck sense does that make? Magic is nothing BUT showing the impossible. I think the audience gasped because of the concept, not because they thought he had killed himself. Same reason people scream at the movies. They know it's not real, it just makes them squirm.

I haven't seen the clip, but I do believe that Blaine is indeed a master showman. He is going back to the days of Harry Houdini and creating newsworthy events for the media to focus on.
