As a manufacturer of chop cups let me take a moment to give you some advice. You may want to look again at the manner in which you are attempting to disengage the ball. I find it hard to imagine that five different chop cups would all have magnets that are too strong.
On the other hand, perhaps you bought five of the same brand of chop cups. All of mine have the same strength magnet. It could be your handling. I would strongly suggest that you work with those that you have before you invest more money. Could it be that you are trying to disengage the ball with a strictly vertical momentum? In other words, are you setting the cup down in such a fashion that the entire face of the cup contacts your surface at the same time? Try tilting the cup just a tad so that one side of the lip is set down momentarily before the other. It is much easier to disengage a ball by rolling it off the magnet than by pulling it directly away in a vertical movement. |

I agree with rik the chop move is angular and it is not so much the impact with the mat as it is the trajectory

I have 3 different types of Chop Cups I use, and I must say, Rik's seems to be the best. I second (or third) the angular motion. May I ask what types have not worked for you?

True , Most Chop cup magnets are to strong seems you have to slam the cup . I solved the problem no more shim ball . A regular ball Is used as if you are performing the cups & balls . DONE DEAL .. works like a charm !

Viking wood bowl with donut
I also have a Morrisey copper chop cup that has a thick bottom not real deceptive way to hide the magnet although it has never been pointed out in performance and I always hand it out Tophatter good point a Benson bowl routine can be just as deceptive as a chop cup

I thought I'd throw in my 2 cents on the chop cup question. The angle idea is absolutely correct as I discovered with the "Ickle-Pickle" cup. When I used the small baseballs, they just would not come out of that cup until I began setting the cup down at an angle.
That being said, I have recently abandoned the use of the chop cup altogether after discovering that a regular cup and two regular balls from the standard C & B's set get the same response. I currently perform a one cup routine while table-hopping with a mini cup and two standard sized balls with two golf balls and a juggling ball as the final loads. There really are not many moves with a chop cup that cannot be duplicated well with any type of cup. Obviously, some of the displays are going to be much cleaner with the magnet but I'm more than happy with the response I get especially when I perform the routine using a coffee cup from the table at which I'm working. I also take issue with the saying that I've read recently in an advertisement for a two cup routine..."One cup is too boring and three cups are too many" My one cup routine is made up of very common sleights and people seem to enjoy it. I can tell from the response that they definitely are not bored. Ya pays yer money and ya takes yer chances!! |

Why don't you try changing the balls instead of the cup itself. Most magic dealers sell spare sets. This might work out a lot less expensive.

I guess some chop cups have a magnet that's too strong. I personally use a small rare earth magnet. I spoke to a distributor and he sent me a dozen different types and sizes of magnets and I tried all of them with some balls from Morrissey Magic. My goal was to make the magnet strong enough so that you could wave your hand around as in normal conversation with the cup upside down and the ball engaged.
Then I tried an abnormally expansive movement. If the ball didn't become disengaged the magnet was too strong. Also, if you just put the cup over the ball and the ball automatically became engaged then that was too strong too. Finally, I build my cups so that the customer can easily replace the magnet with whatever one he chooses. That settles that. |

I own more chop cups than just about anyone else on this list. I have some that were made by Al Wheatley and some that were made by almost all of the other manufacturers as well.
The Rings and Things large Don Alan chop cup is hard to beat. It is different from the ones that were made back in the 70's, though. Now they are made of stainless and copper. But the ball is not hard to dislodge. One of the problems with smaller cups is that sometimes the ball will bounce from the mat back onto the magnet. On very early Rings and Things copper pocket chop cups this was a problem. It was solved by the angular dislodge and by Mike Brazill using a weaker magnet in the copper cups. The copper affected the magnetic field differently than the aluminum. The new Little Don cup in any of the three metals Mike works with does not have that problem at all. Each set is different. You have to learn how your set works. I have NEVER found a set that I couldn't handle, though. One thing you can try is to put the gaffed ball into the cup and see which point it contacts the bottom. Then take a small stick and insert it into the ball and push the gaff away from the covering at that point. This will weaken the pull. Also, the use of a shim ball instead of a magnet can make a difference.

Two of the best mini chop cups (IMHO) are Rik Brook's and the Little Don's. The ONLY thing I don't like about the Little Don's is the sharp lip. It bites after a while.
Rik, Recently used your cup and (variation of) your routine recently at a resturant my Wife and I were dining in. The outcome? The tab was picked up by the wait staff. Thank you!!! Let me know when the DVD becomes available.

Thomas Wayne has developed a new kind of polarity to his magnets and they dislodge with a different action and you can put THE ball on the bottom of an inverted up and it is NOT MAGNETIC until you put it inside the cup. He builds 'em into a nice standard looking white coffee mug.

Another factor that you may not have considered is the performance surface. For consistancy I do not use a close-up mat of any kind with any chop cup. All too often, the ball is dislodged and relodged with close-up mats. Instead, use the bag that accompanies your chop cup as your performing surface. I'll bet I've got more chop cups than you do, Bill

Just me saying this but why would you want to have small cups and balls or chop cup. when you produce your final load its not like producing baseballs, tennis balls you don't know where they came from. when you do t he final load for the mini cups its not as amazing people think oh he could have been hiding them in his hand. that's just my opinion what do other this about this.

As stated in an above post, the James Riser shorty chop cup is great. Your banging troubles will be over. A little twist of the wrist and the ball is dislodged.
I would still be searching for a chop cup that I didn't have to bang had it not been for this one. The quality of the cup is excellent. This WILL be the last one you buy. |
