It's paper that blows up into a ball of flames. Now that should get you thinking as to what you can do with it.

What are the best methods for secretly igniting flash paper?

When I do use flash paper I would thumb clip it ( clipped between your thumb and first fingerm palm facing you ). I would reach and touch a candle flame and throw the paper up in a ball of fire.

The beauty of flash paper is that is burns completely, leaving no ash and no trace. A small piece, once ignited, burns in less that a second so you can light it (by touching to an existing flame, or using an electric heat coil device held in the palm) and throw it. It should burn out completely before touching anything else and thus reduce the chance of setting anyting else on fire
Magic shops sell small concealable igniting devices. Brian Cooper |

There are several options for the iginiting device. One of the latest is called Pyromaniac. It allows you lots of freedom for secretly igniting flash paper, cord, cotton, etc.

For my routines that involve flash paper...I mix the "Appearing Lit Match [from jacket?]" and the flash paper palmed in one of my hands. I bring out the match, make it look like I am going to pick up the flame, and secretly lighting the flash paper. I then quickly blow the paper out of my hand. To the audience, it looks like I took a piece of the flame and blew it out of my hand. It's an easy method, nothing fancy, but it gets the audience's attention.
On an important note for flash paper: 1. Do NOT use more than 2 or 3 pieces of flash paper (the pieces are very small and roughly the size of your palm). If you mix more than 2 or 3 pieces, the flame will last longer and could cause damage to you or your settings (or your audience if you want the fire to shoot out towards them). You might think that 1 piece of flash paper goes out in a split second, but if you put a few more pieces in there, it can last longer than you think. Do NOT have so many flash papers that when you "tightly" wad them up, it is the size of a marble. 2. With any fire or flash magic, you want to always be careful.

Hello:
Flash Paper is a form of Nitro Cellulose or gun cotton. Tissue Paper is used instead of cotton and thus the 'paper' form. Here's a nifty 'secret ingnigiton' device you can make on your own. You need: 1 each mini bic cig lighter, 1 each saftey pin medium, 1 each length of round black elastic like you would use in any 'pull' vanisher, epoxy glue. Make sure the elastic is longer than the length of your arm. Fasten approx. a one 3/4" length to the side of the lighter with the epoxy. Let dry over night. Now, cut the elastic so that if you were to fasten it a the top of the sleeve inside (arm pit) the lighter would hang up in the sleeve far enough to be hidden, but not so far you cannot reach it easily with your other hand to pull it down into the other waiting hand. You HAVE to experiment with this as it makes a difference in what type of jacket you are using, etc. Tie on saftey pin and fasten in jacket, etc. It is easy to 'set' the gaff and have it held ready in what amounts to a kind of finger palm...let's say R.H. When ready your L.H. can steal some F. Paper, ignite the lighter and make ball of flame. Drop R. Arm to side and release lighter. Zippo! It goes up sleeve ready for next time. I've used this for years and its nifty as it is a SURE light of the paper every time and easy to use. Best,

Thanks for that idea, Brad. I have to be a little careful about my prop management, where my costume is concerned. Depending on which effects I'm performing--sometimes I feel a little like Inspector Gadget before the show starts!

Flash paper is a wonderful tool for misdirection. Crowds are astonished in the way they would be if fireworks were suddenly to go off. This provides cover to do just about anything. I've seen it overused, though. My feeling is use it only once in any given performance.

Yo,
The misdirection comment above is great. One reason I came up with my little self vanishing fire starter was to make a steal from beneath the right lower edge of my jacket. Note that as your L.H. tosses the 'fire' into the air, your R.H. drops naturally all the way to the edge of the your jacket releasing the gimmick at the bottom of the drop. This allows the lighter to shoot straight up without catching on the edge of the jacket sleeve. It also puts your R.H. into the perfect position to make a steal of just about anything held inside the jacket, etc. Billiard Balls, entire decks of cards, silk productions, etc. are the obvious. But, you would be surprised at how effective it is to steal something small like a Color Changing Knife that you then magically make appear. Best,

Regarding Brad Burt's neat suggestion:
Cricket makes a "simplicity" style electronic "pocket" lighter that's perfect: it's small, thin, light, totally black, and utilizes a simple push button action. It does have that safety button feature, but it's very easy to take a small flatblade screwdriver (like a jewelers) and snap that piece out, then it works normally. BTW, I think this specific lighter would work fantastically with Hot Leads. They also make this in the traditional flint wheel style, (the mini) but I think the electronic version is easier to use. http://www.cricketlighters.com/pocket.asp
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Many years ago, I had a very small, palmable, flash paper gun.
Would shoot out several feet using just one sheet. Don't know if it is still available, but it was cool.
Here kitty, kitty,kitty.
