Hey guys,
I was browsing http://www.magicvidedepot.com the stage video section under "dove act". He shows his gloves they light on fire he shows his hands front and back. From what I can tell is that they are really on fire. He then blows them out then proceeds. Can anyone direct me toward this effect, from what I can tell is that he isn't using a fickle fire. Eager to hear from you all.... |

Your link is mispelled and if it was spelled correctly would only take you to the hompage, not to a particular video. If you can point us to the exact video your refering to so we can see it you might get better information. There are several ways to do this.

There is a way of doing flaming gloves with ordinary cotton gloves. This has been sold with the dove appearance. I used the flaming gloves for a photo shoot. No, it doesn't use fickle fire gimmicks or anything like that. It could only be used in a show as the opening effect, as there is a little preparation before and after you put the gloves on. Please note that it is more than just putting lighter fluid on the gloves, if you try that you will burn yourself badly.

Phil,
This sounds like the version I need. And to be honest last night in bed I thought of just putting lighter fluid on some gloves. Thanks for steering me the right way. Where can I find more about this? Thanks |

How do you use the search function. It doesn't seem to work for me.

Most of the time when I was doing fire-eating (several hundred performances) I'd begin by dipping my glove's finger (cotton only, never synthetic fabric) into my burning pan or just a candle, and let it lightand use it like a torch. About the same time as the audience sensed a gaff I'd take off the glove and dip my bare finger into the lighter fluid, and light it again. I'd use that finger to light my torches and begin my act. Do not ever use synthetic fabric. Other than that there should be no problem.

During the late 60’s and early 70’s I worked very briefly at the burn unit of William Beaumont Army Hospital in El Paso, Texas. I can tell you hundreds of horror stories of people that were burned very badly in synthetic clothing. It does not burn so much as melt. Imagine hot, molten plastic being poured over your body. Synthetic clothing melts, sticks and even when the live flame is extinguished remains burning hot (hot enough to produce tissue damage).
Further, if you make torches out of some synthetics then you risk a bad burn when it melts and drops of melting material hit your tongue, mouth, whatever! Most natural, untreated (not counting dye) material burns clean. That is that the fire consumes it. If you are wearing cotton, linen, hemp, or whatever gloves and they are soaked in a flammable then the probability of getting burned is high. Play with fire and you will be burned. Even the most practiced fire-eater gets burned from time to time. Any piece of clothing fully aflame will cause tissue damage (burn)! The longer the material is burning against the skin, the greater the probability of serious burn. I’ve never tried the burning glove (or the burning gloved finger). I have a real aversion to having burning garments on my body while they are burning (my days on the Unit you know). However, I have performed the burning finger to light a cigarette bit (how do you do it?). Thanks Slim, I’ll add the finger-torch to mouth gag to my repertoire! I have seen videos of stuntmen doing a full body fire gag. They seem to use some kind of gel for protection. I don’t know what the stuff is called beyond the generic “fire-gel” and doubt if coating your hands under your gloves is a feasible option, if you are going to continue with an act. The stuff appears messy and I suspect that it takes some effort to clean off. When in any act does one have time to clean off a proactive layer of gel? Interesting concept though.

There used to be some stuff called Zell Gel, invented by Zell Miller. Where you would get it now, or even if it's still available, I don't know.

There are fireproof, or should I say, fire-retardent gels, although they are messy.
Here's one example, and in fact I think we will all find it rather interesting that it is primarily composed of the same stuff we use in slush powder ! It doesn't appear that you can but this on yourself though. http://thepost.baker.ohiou.edu/archives2/042799/802.html Zel Gel is made by Zeller International, and they actually won an Academy award for scientific achievement because of it's use by stuntmen. http://www.zeller-int.com/categories/fireret/zeljel.htm They also make some other cool stuff, like an invisible rubber. I can imagine some good magical applications might be derived from their stuff.

"FEATURE: Zel-Jel's™ amazing natural cooling properties will instantly relieve pain and irritation from minor burns! Use it on the job and at home."(?)
If it works, how do you get burned? And as brilliantly mentioned before, when do you clean up? And if you don't need it, why use it? Slim

It's really designed for stunt work, it would have to be adapted to magic. I'm not touting it one way or the other. Just knew of the stuff. It's a pretty interesting site though.

And how do you take off flaming gloves? With another glove? At the risk of a bad pun, this is getting out of hand! The fact is, if you just light just one finger, and for a relatively short time (10/15 seconds) and use cotton gloves,( I worked at a cemetary and copped the pall bearer's gloves) none of the other stuff is necessary!
Somehow, I can't get around the idea of having someone hose me down with gel while I'm performing, and then stopping the show while I change clothes and clean up. In our time when fire effects are at least frowned on, or prohibited, it might be better to fake some other miracle... Or learn to become a fire-eater at a sideshow, or buy another goddam card trick! I've eaten fire for more than 50 years, and while I don't know as much as most of the 14 year olds here,(I knew it all then, too) my input is at least fairly qualified. Slim Price

Flaming Gloves...
I have used fire gloves in shows at raves about 15 times.. I think its the most stupid "trick" one could purchase.. Its dangerous, and unreliable.. The product is called "flamix" and can be applied to the gloves making it burn for a minute or so.. I have burned myself 3 times.. and by the 15th time I tested it my gloves were done.. burnt..finished.. Maybe good for a photo shoot, but not much more.. Beware... |

Reading over my posts, I imagine the impression is that I am negative about fire effects. Nothing could be further from the truth. I am all for it, but I do think that the penalties should be weighed as well as the profits. I 'm good at it, and know a fair amount about the process, and chemicals involved in stuff many of you have never even heard about. What I'm saying here mostly is that many, if not all of you will be burned somewhere in your career, often seriously enough to smell like burned pork! you might look in Shocked & Amazed (Vol 7)for a feature about me, and a picture of my latest act, fire-eating with all the moves that go with it, but without torches.

Gel can be very useful under certain circumstances, and is marketed by a few select companies. But that doesn't mean that anybody should use it. It's really supposed to be used by people who have specialized pyro training.
My thought is, if you don't have the training, do something else. If you absolutely must get some, invest in the training first. The techniques of this should not be discussed in an open forum.

Haha. I love how we all just sit here and talk about lighting our selfs on fire. I use cotton gloves and instead of gel I just dampen my gloves with a special chemical called H2O.
