Does anyone have any contact information for Nick Trost.I feel he is very underrated and deserves some accolades and some recognition for what he has done for magic. His book The Card Magic of Nick Trost is actually my favorite card book ( more sublety than sleights ).
His packet effects from the 70's are still great, not easy to find though.Last information heard about him was he was from Ohio but shyed away from the magic scene. Can anyone help me out with this quest? Rennie

Nick is from Columbus, Ohio area. I used to see him at the Columbus Magifest every year but I have not went in the past couple of years. He is good friends with my friend Bill Meisel.
Send me a regular e-mail tomorrow and I will look and see what I have on file or direct you to some one who would have his address.

I agree, Nick Trost's packet tricks from the '70s ('80s?) were some of the best ever. Not sure if they're still being sold, but if not, worth searching for on Ebay!

If Nick Trost is underrated, Bob Longe is unknown to most of you.
They are not underrated. They are respected by who understand the importance of simpicity and clearity in construction of magic. Hideo Kato |

Hideo,
You may have misunderstood my original post. I personally think Nick Trost is a fantastic cardman and do not feel he gets the respect he deserves from some of the other finger flingers.I also know of Bob Longe as I have a few of his books also. I am a firm believer in "The Effect is the important thing, how you achieve it is not "which is the same philosophy that Nick Trost follows, as well as Bob Longe. Rennie

I'm a fan of Nick Trost's packet tricks from the '70s and '80s and many of them are the best ever made at that time. This guy is in my opinion a genius of it's time. I still use many of them today.

I too am a fan of Nick Trost. Back in the 70's I sold a ton of his packet tricks. I always looked forward to his latest. I would get to the magic shop an hour early and learn his latest arrival, by the end of the day 50% and more were sold. They were very easy to do (if you could do an elmsley count), but they were very entertaining.
I wonder if anyone could put together a complete list of these packet tricks? If so, please do and post them. It would be fun to see this. Thanks.

Ditto on that list! I am a big fan of Nick Trost ever since the '70s and I bought a lot of his packet tricks. Alas, because of the banner hurricane season we had last year (I live in Melbourne, Fla. one of the worst hit areas on the Space Coast) I lost all of my vintage magic paraphernalia that I collected since the mid '60s except for a handful of card effects and all of my gaff coins. One is a Nick Trost packet trick from the bi-centennial year 1976, made out of the old Fox Lake bridge-size cards. It's my prized possession now and it has the original instructions. I have his book "The Card Magic Of Nick Trost" another prized possession. I've had to repurchase a lot of books that I lost also. Kudos to Nick Trost!

Ok I will start the list going. The following are the ones I have been able to find so far, I know I have more but my magic room is overflowing. Please add to the list so I will know what I have to either find or attempt to buy.
Wild Deuce - 1974 / Showdown - 1974 / Wacky Packet - 1976/ The Road Runner - 1976/ Think of an Ace - N/D / Nutshell Monte - 1975/ Sixth-Thot - 1975/ Eight-Card Brainwave - 1976/ Razzle-Dazzle - 1981 / The Born Loser - 1976 / Twisto Blanko - 1976 / Horsin Around - 1978/ Un-Cards - 1976/ 4 Card Monte - 1976 / Fadeaway 4 - 1974/ Half Wild - 1977 (full deck ) I would have to say he was rather prolific in 1976. Please add any I missed. Rennie

Here's some more from Nick Trost: The first three were Nick's creations, but were marketed by someone else.
"Nick's Expanding Cards" (marketed by U.F.Grant 1952) the year I was born! "Telespo" (marketed by H.P.Wisehart 1963) "Half And Half" (marketed by H.P.Wisehart 1964) "Flim Flam" (N.Trost 1974) "Jumbo Two-Way Split" (N.Trost 1974) "Klip Joint" (N.Trost 1974) "Kopy Kat" (N.Trost 1976) "Bicentennial Card Trick" (N.Trost 1976) "Trick-Kards" (N.Trost 1982) "Dream of the Hermit" (N.Trost 1988) "Blind Sight" (N.Trost 1992) "Rainbow Miracle" (N.Trost N/D) I'm sure there's more... <<<KraZy4kardz>>>

KRZ4kardz,
Thanks for the help, I believe I have the ones from the 70's somewhere in my trunks of magic.I would really like to find the one put out by U.F. Grant now, sounds like it may be collectible. Rennie P.S. - Still would love to locate the man though...

This is great! It brings back some fond memories. One of my favorites was AUSTRALIAN ACES. This was a real fooler in the monte tradition. Such packets like HORSIN' AROUND was a bit racy but all in good fun.
I'll bet there was still more. Let's list his books too. Of course his monthly card stuff in the Tops magazine was just that tops. Tops and later The New Tops had some great stuff by Marlo with great photo illustrations. I had the honor of being bio'd in a July 1976 issue by Walt Hudson, of whom I illustrated a half dozen books. Back to Nick Trost, bravo, indeed!

A gentleman showed me flim-flam last night at the magic meeting. Great trick. He said he found it on an online auction I believe.

"The Card Magic of Nick Trost" is a unique book! Aside from sections on packet tricks, special decks, etc; there is even a section on messing around with esp cards! Yes, I would love to hear any more about Nick Trost, esp interviews, video...
