I'm by no means a computer expert, so hopefull you guys can help me out.
heres the problem, theres around 15 files that I cant delete, they've been downloaded somehow, every time I delete them they come back. the fles are causing me to try to send people the files(i think that's the cause anyway) on msn which probably contain virus's aswell, the files themselves are some kind of shortcuts to ms-dos programs if that means anything to anyone. ive deleted msn completely so I cant put anyone else at risk but it still seems to be running somehow. can anyone help me with advice on what to do or perhaps some good virus protection software or whatever is necesary. thanks ollie |

If you think you have a virus, then you need to run a virus scanner. If you don't want to buy one, try a on-line one such as this:

Thank tyou for that, turns out I had about 10 or so virus's and they've all been dissinfected.
the scan also found a lot of adware and spyware, do you know how I can remove it all? thanks ollie |

Use Spybot S&D to sort out the Spy/Adware. Its free
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html And get a firewall as you sound vulnerable to hax.

Your original post sounded like you had a common problem: malware, such as viruses, adware and worms, get copied into the Windows "Restore" temp file. When the system reboots, or is restored, back they come!
You need to disable the Windows "Restore" feature, restart your computer, then turn Restore back on (but only if you need it.) To get there, you can right-click on "My Computer" and select Properties. The System Properties box should pop up. |

I have found the new Microsoft Antispyware program works better than SpyBot and Ad-Aware. It actually checks the integration of the files to be removed and corrects root files. Ad-Aware has actually corrupted my WINSOCK.DLL which will prevent me from getting on the internet. Not once, but twice, on 2 different machines. Since I switched to Microsofts Antispyware and switched brwosers to FIREFOX, I never have popups, or any malware on my machines. Check it out, it's free!

I am with the muzicman on the microsoft anti-spyware. I use that in combination with a "zone alarm" firewall and norton anti-virus. it keeps me protected well.
If you are running windows 2000 or better, a trick most pepole may or may not know is not to surf in "adminstrator" mode. create an account for yourself as a user. It prevents hidden programs from writing and saving on your hard drive.

I used to have spyware out the wazoo. Popups from everywhere, totally annoying me. I ran Spybot, Ad-Aware, and even CWW.Shredder. They kept coming back. Popup blockers did nothing. I finally downloaded and ran the Windows anti-spyware today, and it got rid of everything! You can't imagine the feeling of relief to have no popups! Thank you so much for posting that link. I am forever greatful.
