Just a very simple question:
Would cruise ships books a straight stage mentalism act ever?
I no longer smoke camel cigarettes.

Yes, but be forewarned due to the nature of the act you would have to have different outcomes for every performance otherwise your audience will see you pick the same cards, words, etc etc.

Sometimes.
There is at least one Major cruise line that has a stated policy (viewable on their website) that they will never book mentalists. Ian makes a very valid point too. Most cruise ship timetables mean you do 2 shows, early and late sitting. People can and do come back for the second repeated show. Also note. Rough conditions and the fact that most audience are somewhat aged, means at show time you may find difficulties getting people up on stage. This can drastically cut into some performers material. On the plus side, ships are great for pre show, and the stage/audience setting can work wonderfully for some routines. (I designed a Musical Telepathy routine specifically for Cruise Ship work, using the band. It's in the Notebook.) |

Hi Matt,
My name is Robert Temple. I am the 17 year old that you met at the IBM convention in September. I was in the close-up competition if you remember? Anyway my experience with reading and dealing with people involved in cruise lines I would say that it is very mixed. In other words some cruise lines will and some won't take that or hypnosis. With hypnosis I could work out why due to the bad publicity it has and onboard a ship they won't want to risk the possibility of problems however I can't see how this works with mentalism shows. I have also read the policy that Mr Hyde mentions about not booking mentalists. Good luck with it though. Let us know how you get on. Are you going to Blackpool? May see you there. Best wishes, Rob |

I currently work on ships, but as a DJ. I have yet to see a mentalist. Not that there are not any. I agree with what the other guy said about conditions and getting people on staqe. Some of the old folks make sure they get in the front row to sleep! You would certainly have to switch numbers, outcomes, etc because people would come to both shows just 2 make sure you were "real"
GOOD LUCK

Another pitfall with mentalism is many cruises are extremely multilingual. The key to mentalism is communication, and if half of your audeince does not speak english, that certainly puts you at a disadvantage. Whereas with a magic show or singer or juggler or whatever, there is a much more visual aspect that translates across all languages.

Why not? Because some guests are religious and will think satan has given you eerie abilities. Honest to god. Carnival just started hiring Hypnotists two years ago. Odd Venue really. They really don't like to offend guests. I have stories of guys getting kicked off ships for doing impersonations and guests thinking they where possessed by the devil. No joke.

I do know that fine mentalists Jon Tremaine and Graham Jolley used to work cruises all the time. That was some years ago. I have no idea what the situation is now.

Getting people on stage is not a big problem- I actually do my mentalism in the audience-If it's performing at dinner tables obviously not as good with just seats
If possible I try to organise a mini platform to stand in the centre This creates a much better experience than standing on stage and you can get to the magic quicker because you don't have to go out - find someone and then get them on stage and then get them off stage- You walk out into the audience and do it at the table - I like to think of it as Roving stage magic. I do this on land- not to sure how it would work on cruise ships Dave |

Okay, so here's my question Mentalism question for the guys that perform on the ships.
On my promo DVD I have different sections with several promos of my different shows. Now while I don't intend to pitch that hard for the Mentalism stuff that's on there, should I still even include that section when I'm sending the kits to various cruise agents or is Mentalism such a no/no that I should have that entire demo piece removed altogether and only keep the stuff that I'm specifically pitching to them. Originally my thinking was leave it on and that way if they wanted it then they can have it and if not then they'll hire me for the other show that I'm more specifically pitching. But will the Mentalism have such a poor stigma attached to it that it could actually hurt my chances at getting hired for the other show? And in which case I'm assuming that I should simply leave it off, yes? Thanks in advance! Cheers, Matt (TK) |

I have never seen a menalist but I have seen a husband/wife second site routine. The way it is set up and played works very well. Good luck with that, who ever wants to try.
R.C.C.L. doesn't allow fire, however on our promo we show us using fire. In the contract it was written in bold print, NO OPEN FLAME. They know what they can have and what they can't. Just don't put to much of what they can't. Oh and by the way. Most lines will only accept VHS. They have refused to convert to DVD or computer files. Weird that. Will
