Well if you just start on magic it depends on your learning style. When I just started, books were like utterly useless to me. I didn't get 1/2 of what they were saying and the illustrations confused me at first because I just sucked at learning magic from books. I learned my first magic from Born to Perform so DVD was my thing. It depends on your learning style. If you learn better from books, borrow/buy books, if you learn from watching, get DVD and tapes. But please
DO NOT BORROW MAGIC TRICK BOOKS FROM THE LIBRARY. Do anything but that. They teach you the worst things in the world and it gives you a bad beginning into the exciting world of magic (hey it sounds like a TV commercial) |

Thank you guys for your advice. now I have something to start.i am thinkin of buying the Mark Wilson book. I saw the contents in the internet and it has many magic tricks..really interesting. the royal road is just cards and I think some of you are right. its good to start with something else together with cards..I like impromptu also..well do you think the JawDropper is good? should I get it too? or should I try to strengten my basics before that one.thank you guys..all of you, except the one that said that stay with the gimmics. Even I as a begginer feel that's a terrible idea.

Don´t stick to them. I´m pretty sure it was just a joke. The Mark Wilson book is a good start. Try to see which types of magic you like, and then go on....... a whole new world is waiting!

Trick Decks are fine and dandy - you can do a lot with them, so don't abandon them.
That said, there is great personal satisfaction that comes with fooling your audience with sleights that you have worked hard to master. Sleights - the lesson that took me the longest to learn was that virtually *any* sleight can be mastered EASILY -- *IF* you will take the time to practice it. I stopped thinking of different sleights in an "easy to hard" scale, but as simply a "time needed to master" time frame. In other words, I began to think of all sleights as being easy, the only variable was how long it took to master it. It revolutionized my card work because I came to understand that all sleights were within my grasp if I would use my time and my patience (impatience can kill good magic!). A few months ago I could not dribble cards at all. I decided I wanted to. Found the method and went to work. I stunk for a few days, BUT PRESSED ON. It took a few weeks of practicing 30-40 times a day, but now I can do it easily. Same for a strike double lift, which at first seemed almost impossible. But after a few weeks of *simply trying it 30-40 times per day* it started coming to me. Hope you get some mileage out of all this!
My ex-cat was named "Muffin". "Vomit" would be a better name for her. AKA "The Evil Ball of Fur".

Anything Ammar does is excellent because he is a great teacher. Check his stuff out to go along with Royal Road and maybe a good DVD on sleights

Get yourself a copy of The Royal Road to Card Magic. Card College is excellent too - the text is probably more accessible than that in The Royal Road. Michael Ammar's Easy to Master Card Miracles on video are very good, as well, in my opinion. However, that's already more magic than most people would ever need in a lifetime just in those! It's really important to have a few tricks absolutely nailed down to the floor, rather than having a tenuous grasp on a larger number of tricks - see the first paragraph of Royal Road on this point. However I have far more books, videos and DVDs than I can possibly use, some with tricks in that I'll never be good enough to perform convincingly. I really enjoy the books and reading the literature though, but I really try to have a handful of tricks that I can do well - I'll come back for the others as and when I can.
Also, a really important point has got to be practicing at every opportunity. I learned my Elmsley count and Gemini count on the train to and from work - I felt pretty self conscious though - and try to use any dead time to work on sleights generally.

The Royal Road to Card Magic is often trotted out as THE book to get, but in reality any book on card magic which teaches you a good shuffle control, a double lift, a couple of forces, and a false/cut shuffle is adequate.
You can perform thousands of card miracles with just those. False deals, changes, steals, passes and palms are for the really dedicated. You don't need them to start with. |
