For those of you that don't know me, I'm a seasoned professional that works the college, corporate, and theater circuits. I'm looking to branch out in to a couple of other areas, specifically cruise ships (which another thread on that can be seen elsewhere) and comedy clubs. One of my acts I feel would work very well at them and there’s a second that I’ve been working on for them too.
Anyway, what specifically should be included in the press kits that go out to these clubs? In other words should they be any different than the usual ones that would go out to one of my potential clients? Do I include a price list or a quote... or do they call me up and offer me a set price? These are just a couple of questions that have come to mind initially. But for those of you that have done these markets really anything else that comes to mind that may be of relevance to me would, as always, be greatly appreciated as well. Thanks in advance everyone! -Matt (TK) |

Sorry Matt:
I know a lot about press kits and promo materials as I design them for folks. I just do not know as much about your two new markets as I have not worked them before. If you would like any information in regards to what the press kit should look like, how to design one, ways to keep cost down etc. , then simply PM me or post here and I can offer some suggestions. Hopefully by then someone will have some information for you pertaining to these new markets. Kyle

Thanks Kyle. My press kit is actually all together but only for the markets that I work in (Corporate, College, and Theater). I was just wondering if there was any sort of a variant that the comedy clubs preferred as well as whether or not you send a price quote or if they just make you an all out offer.
But in the future should I have a press kit question (as I no doubt will along the way) then I'll be sure to keep your name in mind. So don't be surprised if I end up taking you up on your offer down the line sometime. Thanks again! Cheers, -Matt (TK) |

Not a problem at all. Since I am also a graphic designer, I can answer any of your design or promo questions or needs. I have found ways of keeping things cheap on the price but high on the quality. I look forward to talking to you at some point down the road. Kyle

For clubs they want a B & W 8 by 10 headshot and some credentials. Give em a list of references. If you are just starting in this market you will begin by being the Feature spot. 30 min show. 500 bucks a week and you pay for all of your travel, gas and food. They will put you up in a hell hole of a condo. Once you climb up to headliner you can make a grand and up a week. Keep in mind a week is Wed-Sun. Two shows a night and three on Sat.

It doesn't sound like a very profitable market

That may be the case, but I guess it comes down to a basic marketing principle that can be applied to any market. You are only as good as your perceived value in the eyes and mind of your client. If you can solve your clients needs and offer them many solutions to meet those needs, then your perceived value goes up. The minute your value rises, so does the money coming into your own pocket. I have never worked the comedy club curcuit, but I would think these rules could still apply. Kyle =)

Keep in mind to that a quality product and well branded kit will work wonders for you. Go the extra length to get it done properly and professionally. Often times the first impression anyone gets of you, is the materials you send them. Make sure those materials look and communicate the best they can.

Gee Matt, Thanks. That's the nicest thing anyone has ever said to me here.
Glad I can help. Thank you for giving me something to do during all of my down time. I feel like I am semi-retired right now. I said a grand a week. Some headliners make more and all of them do BOR sales. T-shirts and junk. It took me three months to go from open mic, to house M.C. to Feature act. I did it for about a year and decided it wasn't my bag. Dealing with the drunks and club owners. Sitting in an airport. Ft. Lauderdale has free wirless internet. That rocks. Oh and that Shecky website I turned you onto, well Kidd Dave Miller is a guy I have worked ships with. He did clubs for a long time and is now enjoying the cushiness of ship life. Will
