There is a great version of this called the Russian Rattleback. This has two little turtles sitting on top. As long as you spin it in the direction in which the turtles are facing it spins freely but if you try to make the turtles go backwards it will spin very briefly, wobble and then start going in the other direction. There are several permutations as you can turn the turtles. It is well worth checking out. It is more expensive than the plastic rattleback but it does open up a number of patter possibilities.
