The only ring effect I do now is Ring Rapture by Bob Solari.

Which of these is better?

I always have a preference for wood and brass but will consider any effect if it is good for the spectator. I do enjoy mechanical things myself.

ok - I am game..

I like the ellis ring - but then I also bought a booklet on it so that I could do more than the standard stuff.

If done right - this looks very magical and sometimes very eerie.

Hope that helps a little,

The Gemini Ring is a very cheap looking piece of plastic, and despite the ad claims, it CANNOT do everything an Ellis Ring can. The size difference between the real thing and secret something is also much more noticeable. The Ellis Ring looks like a standard harness ring available from any hardware store.

IMO, the Gemini ring is more like something that should be included in children's magic sets, while the Ellis Ring is a professional prop.

Thanks Scott,
Thats exactly what I was looking for. I seldom get something without all of the extra books or tapes, and add ons.

The next question I have is this. A couple of sites offer the Ellis ring and a book for $5-$10. A Johnson version is $15-$18. Is there a level of quality to look for?
Can I assume the cheap ones are cheap knock-offs and avoid them?

The Ellis ring is the one to get, but there are several versions. I saw one that is made of rectangular stock, rather than round stock -- total piece of garbage. Stick to Ellis rings that are made of round metal stock because they're much easier to handle.

I'd recommend the Johnson Ring. It is so well made, that if I am distracted while practicing by a phone call etc, and forget where I am in the routine, I often have to pick up the ring to find out if the gimmick is in place or not--it's that well made.

Some of the cheaper ones are serviceable, but the Johnson one is MUCH better quality and will last at least your lifetime.

Incidentally, I have a routine with this prop in my book, Magishing My Way that is getting some good reviews. Just so you know, you'll need TWO of these rings if you choose to learn my routine.

I am taking note when folks mention books. I have a few more smaller props to obtain or upgrade to better versions. When these are out of the way, I will be restocking my library, and both this one and your coinage,
book are on the list. Reeds knuclebusters are on the list too.

Scott is correct, the Johnson ring is far superior to anything out there currently. I spent 15 minutes looking for the gimmick, till I found it you know where. Or maybe I just need new glasses! lol Smile

Last question. Viking or Johnson?
Which is the better quality?

I hate to keep bugging folks, but what about
the U.F. Garnt "Swing a Ring" Is this something to even consider?

I realy would like a good ring effect, that the specs will enjoy too.

I ordered the Viking model. If I don't like it, I will sell it and get the Johnson. Or just get the Johnson and work on Scotts Two
ring presentation.

Thanks for the advice,

Mike

The gemini Ring is now available in brass, and although larger than a finger ring (a bit over an inch in diameter), as part of the provided routine it is passed off as a finger ring and then "stretched".

It's actually much more deceptive than the Jardine Ellis Ring I had, but by the sound of it, mine was not nearly the quality of either the Viking or Johnson prop.

I always liked the Merry Go Round brass ring connection. Smile

Wow, I never knew the Gemini Ring came in brass, I bought mine awhile ago. I guess I have to upgrade.

Joe Porper is about to release the "JP Ellis Finger Ring" plated in GOLD... it is a wedding band constructed ala the Ellis Ring. In addition, Martin Breese has granted Porper permission to re-write material from the original John Howie book on the Ellis Ring to fit the wedding band size.
