The notion that video could create an instant, albeit bad, magician, is absurd.
I'll concede that I feel that video is meant to be used to augment books, though, not to replace them. The primary advantage, or point, of video over books is to be able to actually see the moves in motion, to get a clearer understanding of the subtlties of the speed and timing of the moves, or to clarify perhaps certain hand positions, because all too often the older magical texts can be written poorly or ambigiously. Poor use or understanding of English grammar is largely the cause of this, and if anyone wants some examples, I can cough some up in a follow up post. For one quick example of how easily English can be garbled to change the meaning, consider these two statements: Not everyone is a magician. Everone is not a magician. If you think these two sentences mean the same thing, think again. The first statement clearly indicates that some people are not magicians. The second states that NO one is a magician ! It's this kind of butchery that makes video such an asset, and this is far from my best example. One last rant, if I may : several of the older magicians seem to have had something of an apprenticeship; this means they got to see those moves that they read about performed in person, so that they too could witness the proper speed, timing, and angles. They would be so quick to deny that benefit to somebody trying to teach themselves in nowheretown, USA ? That would be downright heinous !
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

So while your point may be valid in some ways, I don't see it as being the same thing that some of the guys I know treat magic as if it is something you have to earn respect in while what I see is a lot of people getting handed things on a silver platter (read DVD) and not understanding the value of it... just wanting more, more, more, more.... Just my opinion. Greg

Oh, I see now. Sure your going to give your buddy a good review even though the material sucks and is way overpriced. I see how it is now. Then I have seen some killer, usable, good priced material get ripped to shreads only to find out close has a grudge. I think his time is about up and they need to get someone new to start reviewing stuff for us to give us all a fair review. I know lots of people that listen to close so much that they will not even check an effect out for themselves if he says its not good. Then they go out and buy all the crap he likes. I got news for some people. Not everyone likes what everyone likes. Just because close likes something doesn't mean go out and buy it. It may not fit your style, or you, or be that great of a trick in your eyes. Give every trick its fair chance and see if its usable to you and your act. I wish Josh Jay did all the reviews. He is a fair guy. He has no grudges and can judge everything like it should be. I have never met or seen Josh Jay but I have read a lot of reviews that he has done and he is always professional about his stuff and the way he presents the effects, good or bad. If he doesn't like it he lets you know exactly why and what could make it better. I just think its time to step down and get someone new in to do these reviews.

Well, if you actually read the entire review section each month, or maybe actually talked to Mike, you would find out that he has lost friends because he gave their products bad reviews. I think Mike is very fair, and a nice guy. He backs up all of his reviews, and I challenge anybody to prove he has a grudge against Oz or Penguin. The idea that he would let a personal issue affect his reviews of a product is absurd. He backs up everything he says, good or bad, with evidence. I go to people like him for the truth. I tend to take a lot of what I read here on this forum with a grain of salt, because not many people back up their opinions with proof. People that make assumptions about people based on their personal opinions are not to be trusted. Professional jealousy, in my opinion.

Hello:
I have to agree with MagicChris concerning Michael Close and his reviews. He is definitely hit and miss with me; I still remember he panned David Regal's "Alone" card effect, and yes, I do remember the glowing review he gave to the WD40 caps. The little I've seen of Oz I do like - never bought any of his materials, though. So Close may be right on (hit) or way off (miss). Ron |

No one can argue about the way Oz can handle a pack of cards. Close may have a problem with the effects themselves.

There are a lot of people that handle cards well. What good are technical skills(even though Oz is far from being one of the most techincally talented out there) if your material is weak or improperly structured? Which, I agree with Mike, much of Oz' material is.

They were great videos, the had a lot of material, a lot of original effects and ideas, great quality, and he offered a no questions asked FULL MONEY BACK REFUND INCLUDING SHIPPING if you were not happy with them. What more can you ask for. Plus Todd had tested every effect for many years in all his restaurants. I have seen Todd work and he is very skilled at what he does. Not to many magic effects come with a refund if your not happy, and I cant think of any other videos off top that ever had. Him and mike had some problems about a year earlier. Mike just ripped his videos a new one basicly ending with "these are crap, and don't waste your money" Now in my opinion. I bet mike didn't even look at them. He just tore into Todd because of a past problem. Anyone who has seen the videos know that there was tons of usable material on there for just about anyone. It was just sort of funny how Todd had about 20 very big names backing him up and Mike was the only one who didn't like them. It didn't matter though because Todd ran an add in magic for about another year and had nothing but quotes from big dogs backing him up and sold tons of videos. To this day he is still selling them. Just shows that the videos were good.

Hi,
I've been out of town for the past week, and just got back. The copy of MAGIC is still in my mailbox, but I'll probably read it later today and comment. -Oz |

Hey, I just re-read my prior post, and I think I may have come off as a bit of a jerk. I think I owe Chris the largest apology, because my post sounded like I was directing a great deal of anger his way. I'm not like that! I apologize for that. Now, I am still sticking to my guns when it comes to Mike's reviews, but I didn't want you guys to think that I don't respect your opinions. Maybe we can just agree to disagree?
As for Mr. Pearlman, I don't have anything against him either. He is a very good teacher and his enthusiasm for magic is infectious. I'm sure many people have developed a love for magic because of him, and I respect him for that. He will be lecturing in my neck of the woods in the coming months, and I will be sure to be there. We may not agree on all of "the issues", but I think we should be able to set aside our difference once in a while and just go with the flow, know what I mean? Who knows, maybe meeting him in person will change my mind. It's happened before. Again, I apologize for the angry post. It wasn't intended to be like that. -Karl |

Rather than sling accusations, would it not be productive to defend one's opinions with statements relating to the contradiction of opinion? What points in Close's review of Oz did you disagree with and why? Accusing people of letting their contacts dicate their review is groundless UNLESS you can take issue with a specific statement and rebut it.
Take Killer Red Caps. I used it to land a trade show client for whom I worked 3 years featuring that trick as part of the customized product message. The crowds loved it, but more importantly the clients kept me coming back. So while you may not have received value from KRC there are those of us out there who did. As to the Oz release, I think the provenance Close offers of Oz's handlings are irrefutable and his decontructions of the effect's handlings are spot on.I felt he did a great job of defending each of his claims. If you would like to disagree, perhaps you would tell us specifically what you disagree with and why? Otherwise we're accomplishing nothing other than schoolyard games. |

I read the review. It looks like Mike went out of his way to give Oz some good "fatherly" advice. Oz has the chops, no doubt about that. Maybe it's the plots in his material that need to be looked at.
