I do not have a rice bowl, but I like the concept... and may get one down the road.
I have a crystal casket, that has been sitting on the shelf for 5 years(since I got it) but I was just messing with it the other day and I found that if you work the angles, and load it correctly it does look nice, so I might use it in a future show. I fooled a 12 year old with it. (you can PM me if you have any other questions about the crysltal casket) |

I used to have a set of Rice Bowls, but never got much out of them. It is a classic trick that can work if performed with a bit of showmanship (I believe Jack Gwynn used to feature it). A good story and the right music would definitely help.
As for the Crystal Casket - it is okay for a quick, visual production of a silk or a few sponge balls. Other than that, there's not much to it. |

Thanks for the link. I've been looking for a set of rice bowls that aren't that funny Brahman bowl shape.
Although, I'd like to find a white china bowl version a la Baker. |

I think Tannen still sells the Al Baker Rice Bowls... best method IMHO.

Every time I've gotten a crystal casket I've traded it off in a few weeks. It's not for me.
However, had you said the Crystal Silk Cylinder, I think I have three complete ones now and I work them to death. I even used one in TV commercials for a very major soft drink company and to introduce imported ale another time about ten years apart. It is a very versatile prop. The drawback is that it is silk based. If you don't do silk magic you'll never have a use for one. If you do silk magic, you’ll need to buy two at a time. Bob Magic By Sander |

I still use the old style rice bowls in my show and I get wonderful reactions from my audiences so I guess this is a good purchase since they say it's a better version than the old style.

Rice Bowls: This is an import version made of spun aluminum that has liquid load finale. The working is like the Brahmin Bowls, but the shape is like the classic rice bowl. Inconsistent with much of the other import stuff, these are very well made. They are at least 6" diameter, if not larger. They could very easily be seen from a stage, but small enough to do for smaller shows. But of course, you can get most of that from the ad.
I have a set of them, and am quite pleased with them. The one potential problem is that rice grains can infiltrate the load chamber. The instructions included a solution to this. I prefer to use, instead of rice, something like puffed wheat cereal (I have a different presentational theme). It doesn't cause the same problem as rice, it is real cheap if you buy the generic bags, and it is extremely light weight. Big bags of rice get heavy. Crystal Casket: As Bob indicated, this is a limited usage prop... don't try to build your show around it. Think of it like an appearing cane in its duration, except it always takes up the same space in your travel case. The trick is however, nice, flashy, and very easy to do. The one thing that I tend to question is, why are they still made with that awful retro 70's refractory tape??? I'd think it would look pretty nice with a plain design frame, or border (even colored plastic tape would be an improvement). I may try my hand at making one with an exotic hardwood frame. (It wouldn't sell for seventeen bucks, though!) ~michael

Elton John's would need a flashy colored boa of feathers. Dragunsfyre would need one with playing card edges. But the classic would be chromed barbed wire trim! I thought yours would have sausage fingers all around the edges? I want one with crime scene tape around it! (Call it CCSI) (If it will help your feelings, my first one had plain black tape around it. But people keep expecting an aquarium of fish!) Ok, back to work. Bob Magic By Sander |

The commonly available ickle pickle casket with the diffraction tape used to have a problem with the tape becoming unstuck at the center of each edge. (i would hope they have that fixed by now.)
many, many, many, many, many years ago I got the abbotts version. I did not like the edging and replaced it with green tape. this is not a difficult operation. |
