Looking for advice on how to develop effects that would require electrical engineering. Specificly I'm trying to create pyrokinesis effects, but any info on building small remote control devices would be greatly appreciated!

Remote control devices are one thing, but if you´re about to use pyro, its another ballgame.
I´am a trained pyrotechnician I strongly advice you NOT to make radio controls for pyro yourself. And, if you have no training in pyrotechnics, don't go beyound flash paper/string/cotton. There are professional wireless pyro controls available and they all have safety features built into them, like scrambled frequences. A home made unit might go off from various sources, like police radio, cellphones or whatever and that creates a very real hazard. All pyro, even flash paper, is dangerous. The company for which I freelance as an FX/fireworks tech had the wireless system designed by electronics engineering students as their master project. Every single receiver is encoded and they receive the code first, verify it and only when it is verified, the fire command is transmitted as short pulses and when all 6 pulses are there, they will fire. There´s tons of other safety features built in and the system still went through an extensive testing period by authorities (simulated in design phase and physical when the hardware was all built) before it was finally approved for actual use. I wish you success in remote controlled things, but leave the pyro to professionals.

Okay, just needed help not a lecture. I was not planning on building this myself. I have access to a few of the top FX companies in Hollywood, and would be outsourcing the construction to one of them.
Also, I'm working on a very small scale for performance and safety issues. There is one effect out there called "psychic fire". It's pricey and I believe you have to use the supplied ashtray. It'd be a little weird carrying around my own ashtray in bars and restaurants. Anybody know of any sources of info for effects like this? |

Bloodkin, my intention was not to lecture. Sometimes people just ask advice for such amazing and/or dangerous things (not to say yours is) here that often a word of warning is in place. In this case the FX company you´re planning to outsource the work to propably could help you all the way. Let us know how it turns out.
