I recently bought Pop Haydn's set of ebooks (excellent material!) and watched the videos he's posted for the Chicago Surprise. While watching them, I remembered a discussion on this forum about doing the classic force to the spectator's left hand:
http://www.themagiccafe.com/forums/viewt......rum=2&19 At one point in the Chicago Surprise, you force a card (using the classic force) to a spectator. When Pop Haydn performs this using a single spectator, that person's right hand is busy holding a card on the table. In this case, the classic force, by default, causes the spectator to use their left hand, which may assist in accomplishing the force. The discussion of forcing to the left hand, in Genii magazine Mar 2002 by Patrick Page - "The Left Handed Force" - doesn't discuss the 'why' of the method much, other than noticing it uses the typically weaker left hand. Still, it's neat to see the Chicago Surprise take advantage of this idea (if it is valid), even if not consciously so. Of course, as Pop's video shows, it doesn't stop the spectator from asking for another card, when you offer it to them. -) Larry S. |

Now on DVD, with a bonus pdf of the complete original manuscript:
http://www.penguinmagic.com/p/S18642 I loved reading through this manuscript several years ago - not just for the routine, insights and tips on routining, but also largely for Pop's unabashedly firm views on the value of learning and performing tested routines exactly "as written" before attempting to personalize them. That particular piece of advice flew in the face of so much that is written in on-line forums, where people often seem reluctant to admit they'd consider performing any routine without modifications (ie, "my head is already spinning with ideas. Can't wait for it to arrive in the mail."). But then someone of Pop's caliber admonishes us to crawl before we walk, arguing that we'll eventually run much sooner if we do so. Lay the foundation before starting work on the upper floors, and all of that. Anyway, it was reassuring and felt like solid advice.
Now appearing nightly in my basement.

I love everything that Whit Pop Haydn has ever put out. His are the definitive versions of longtime audience tested routines (Chicago opener/red hot mama, Mongolian pop knot/professor's nightmare, 4 ring routine, color changing knives, three shells, three card monte, etc.)
The best routines, philosophical musings, and instruction not to be missed from a master magician and fantastic teacher. His dvds are worth double, triple, the asking price, and, these effects will last and continue years after most of the hyped new flavor of the month effects are long forgotten. If you are unfamiliar with Mr. Haydn's work, do yourself a favor and buy his dvds at his school of scoundrels (pophaydn.com or popsmagic.com). |
