New member here!
Hi all, I've been lurking around these forums on and off for a while now, and have finally decided to join. Here are two reasons why: 1. The amount of knowledge on these forums - many of you seem to have been in the art for quite some time and have many experiences to call from; I look forward to interacting and learning from all of you. 2. The analytical and mature posts - I am a member of two other magic forums, and I must say, their level of maturity pales in comparison to this board. I am one who is always in for a good debate, and was pleased when I stumbled upon several threads where members had conflicting ideas - they were very interesting reads Anyway, here is a little bit about my magic... Throughout my childhood, I have been fortunate to be able to travel to numerous countries around the world. In a single year, I might make a trip to Singapore, then Bali, and then Italy - my parents took every opportunity to travel. Looking back, I find it interesting that every place we went to, we would always watch some magic of sorts. Be it Siegfried and Roy in Las Vegas, a magician performing on the streets of Venice, or a local magician at our country club, I was exposed to this art at a very young age. I brought this up with my parents recently - the point of us watching magic often during my childhood - and they came to the conclusion that it was simply a coincedence. They explained that they had always enjoyed watching magic, and simply wanted me to have some fun. Consequently, I picked up the art in my grade 7 year. It was an earnest beginning. I simply wanted to mimic what I had seen. I wanted to see what it was like to be able to entertain people like that. In a short time, I had a library of tricks. Mind you, they were all gimmicked (weren't we all like that at one point), but I still found satisfaction performing them. One thing about me is that I've always liked using my hands. I find a strange pleasure in feeling things engage, buttons depress, or cards slide. My first trick was Nickels to Dimes, quickly followed by Scotch and Soda and Bill through Quarter. However, withing two years or so, I became bored. The satisfaction I had gained from playing with these gimmicks slowly faded away. And thus, I stopped pursuing the art of magic in grade 9. Fastforward three years. I'm now in grade 12, at a new school, a new school system, and a new country. One day, I'm sitting in my dorm surfing the net, when I see a site boasting something called, "revolution". I go to that site, watch the video, and buy the effect right away. Browsing around the site, I see several videos teaching numerous card sleights and effects - all done with normal packs of cards. I think to myself, "This is what I've been looking for. Magic that is done purely in my hands". Feeling an old flame rekindling, I search the net for any information I can find regarding sleights, cards, and magic in general. It has now been about 4 months since my "rebirth". I have now taught myself a small army of card sleights and effects, and have begun to branch out into coin magic, and metal bending. Wow, that's a really long post!! But, I thought it was appropriate to fill you in on my "magic background". Now, just a little information about myself...I'll be quick, I promise =) I was born on March 9th, 1987, in the Vancouver Children's Hospital. Before I was one years old, my family moved to Hong Kong. There, I attended a British English Foundation School (basically the best way to learn English in HK). It was in HK that I acquired my English backbone. When I was six, my family moved back to Canada. This time, Buckingham Heights, Burnaby, British Columbia. After staying for only two years, my father moved us to Old Greenwich, Connecticut. One wet and dreary year later, we moved to sunny, utopic (in my eyes, anyway) Palos Verdes Estates, California. A beautiful, secluded little city tucked away on a mountain peninsula, I spent the next 7 years here, making lifelong friends and harvesting an interest in magic. Alas, the good times must often end, and after grade 9 (now 2002), my father decided to move us to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I found it ironic, however, that right after moving us up to Canada, my father immediatley left for business in Asia, and I was accepted into a boarding school in vancouver. Soon, my sister was accepted into a boarding school as well, and my mom joined my father in Asia. During long weekends or holidays, we often use our house as a "meeting place" of sorts, to see each other in the flesh. Ironic, no? Nevertheless, I have made many friends in the boarding house, and have begun amazing my fellow schoolmates =) Finally, after what seems like an eternity, I am finished. I look forward to my time on this forum. Cheers, Aaron Chung

Welcome to the Café. I wish this site and the internet were available when I first started magic back in high school and college. The only way back then to review magic tricks was to purchase it and see if it lived up to the description in the catalog. It would have saved me a lot of money that I spent on the worthless tricks.
Now, before I purchase a trick, I simply pose the question to the Café members or at least read all the threads on the subject. Welcome and enjoy the Café. |
