Any suggestions how to create the effect of a spirit (ie vapor) visually appearing inside a sealed jar? Preferably with non toxic ingredients.

I have 2 books on chemical magic. Let me check them out again and I'll see if I can come up with something.

Ghost bait.
Dunk some ectoplasm in honey, leave in the bottom of the jar On a serious note, I recently picked up "The Modern Art of Conjuring", a reprint of the 1886 text by Henri Garenne. In it is a section dealing with manifestations, spirit effects, etc. (BTW, a great deal at Barnes & Nobles, I got this book in the discount bin for under $6 !) Anyway, there is a similar effect listed where a head in a bottle becomes animated (real) once set on a table. Now, some questions about exactly what you want: Does this effect require the bottle to be suspended, or can it be set on a rigged table ? Does it need to have a discernable face, or is just a ghostly mist okay ? Have you considered having the bottle's need to appear totally emtpy beforehand, vs. something already in it becoming animated to indicate the presence of the spirit ? At the simplest, you could just have a false bottom and pump some smoke into the bottle at the right moment. Another thought: I don't know what kind of smoke is UV reactive, but you could try having a small LED blacklight turn on at the right moment to reveal pre-existing smoke in a dimly lit setting. Don't have anything else near the bottle that's UV reactive and the blacklight shouldn't even be noticed, only it's effects.
Just hanging out with the rest of my fellow dregs.

Using the old chemical principle used many years ago by some cigarette manipulators... have one of the chemicals on the jar lid and the other chemical inside the jar... when you seal the jar the two chemicals will interact.
I'm sorry I can't tell you the chemicals here because they frown on that. Go to any chemical magic book and you'll be able to find what you need to know. It also might be interesting if you combine the chemical principle with the silks in a jar idea as used by Henning so that once the smoke starts something else moves within. You could have a compartment in the jar lid that will release a tiny silk that is controlled by thread. Greg

From 6th grade science class ages ago....... A quick google will get you the needed info. You will get a nice little vapor, not too much- so no good for much more than close up, and the jar would need to be on a base, (a dark fabric covered one to show the vapors off the best..... Kay

I seem to remember seeing a projection of a ghost on vapors/mist. It was really creepy because the mist/vapors kept the form from being static.

Hi, all
The idea of making some form of manifestation, I to, find very appealing. The routine in Band of the Hand, by Docc Hilford, entitled Swamp Water is an excellent story and such simple handling, the only draw back is relating it to the UK setting. I have been looking at the kind of effect produced by swamp water i.e. pretty much psychological, and thought the same kind of approach would work well if instead of using swamp water the jar contained a spirit or ghost. Again I am drawing a blank on finding info on crating a spirit without using either toxic chemicals, creating noxious gas or recipes that require the use of material that is not sold for safety reasons. If anyone has any info for creating a spirit in an otherwise empty jar, your help would be most appreciated. Thanks Glenn Collins.

Here's an idea with little authenticity that I've not persued... A little pea of dry ice, agitated by one of those battery driven room scent fans.

Instead of a jar, you may want to look into one of those round glass globes that look like a large crystal ball. They're made for displaying dried flowers and similar stuff... you unscrew the globe from the base, put whatever inside, and screw the globe back on. Many years ago I filled one with water and had a six-inch crystal ball for a couple of bucks. You can probably find them at craft shops or second-hand stores.

There are plenty of ways to do the effect. I can't really tell you without giving the secret away. Its in scarnes book of magic tricks which is a nice little book which tells you how to do it. Its cheap and I got my copy from books etc when I was starting out.

Every method I know, there are a few, releases toxic gas, some very dangerous some lesser. The most common one looks easy and supposedly uses house hold ingredients, but in fact those ingredients have been tamed and will not work. The purity needed just ain't there.
Slim Thinking about this, I came up with an idea. (untested) Do some homework on home made Lava Lamps. There's plenty of material on the net fitting your peramters, and imagination will take you far. If you're an elitist, disregard this... Slim

There's an effect of mine published in the magicbunny e-zine in wich you visibly catch a ghost in a glass bowl during a seance. Uses chemicals.
note: these are dangerous chemicals and are not legal in many coutries, in brazil they're allowed. You can read/download it here: http://www.magicbunny.co.uk/tophat/issue7.pdf Hope it helps. |
