What is the best set of professional Color Changing Knives to buy, that will fit most any good table hopping/strolling routine?

I would go with Joe Magar.

As far as quality for the cost and being readily available, the Mogar knives ARE excellent. Whit Haydn's new set (which I've been told is made by Mogar, but I haven't verified that) is very nice. The Scotty York knives are very nice but expensive and difficult to come by sometimes. The Merrill Knives are good if you can find them. I don't like the Tannen knives--they're pretty expensive and they don't open--they're not even really knives, just kinda knife cases that look like closed knives.

Yes, I forgot about those. I don't own them, but I have seen them and they are very nice. Stevens seems to have them in "intervals"--now would be a good time to snatch them if they are available.

I saw photos of the Mogar knives, like the ones Whit Hayden uses.
With one side not only having a different color, there is also a visable texture difference, for the purpose of telling the knives apart while in the pocket. Does this difference in texture take away from the color changing effect? Steve |

Not at all. The change is White to almost Black (dark dark brown). The texture is there for convenience. Great set!

I do not believe what're the best knives. I believe it's the operator of the knives that make them the best.

I like the Mogar knives very much. But IMO the best knives are still the Merrill knives, because they are as easy to handle as the Mogar knives, but they have metal bolsters on both ends preventing flashing the underside.
Unfortunately Merrill knives are very hard to find. Marcus |

Does Whit Hayden's video routine come with the purchase price for the knives, or is that a separate purchase?
Thanks Steve |

I've only seen the knives, video and lecture notes sold separately.

Steve, Whit Haydn's knives do not come with the handling. He has a video out called the "Intricate Web Of Distraction." To me it is the best routine out there.
Also, his knives are very easy to work with. Go to Magicsmith and you can purchase these (set of three) for 40% off regular price as advertised. vinny |

I bought the Tamariz set of knives from Stevens magic and I'm very happy with the quality. I'm not sure of this, but I believe the routine was not included. You should look it up in Sonata or on the video from Tamariz by Stevens Magic.

It depends on your routine. If you only need the knife to change one color, the best set IMO is also the oldest one I know of, the Enardoe set. Other sets I've seen over the years have been failed attempts to build a better mousetrap IMO. For me, the Enardoe set handles the best. Plus, it has a locking mechanism that I use in my comedy presentation of the effect (spectator can't open the knife, and after the magician opens it, the spectator can't close it). Your mileage may vary.

No one mentions the Daryl knives. Are they any good? How do they stack up to the others mentioned?
thanks, -erik |

I have a set of the Whit Haydn knives, (yes, Joe Mogar makes them). Joe also made some custom knives to my very demanding specifications. I must tell you, I was extremely impressed by the quality of workmanship! Fit and finish are superb and the balance of the knives is great.
I also own an original set of Merrill knives (with the silver bolsters, not the subsequent set from India with brass bolsters). I have also handled other knives, but, frankly, think the Mogar and the Merrill are the very best. I think the turnover move is easier with the Merrill knives because the knife blade does not protrude so far when it is closed. On the other hand, Joe Mogar intentially designed his knives with a blade that protrudes more because he feels that it prevents inadvertent flashing. Joe and I disagree a bit about the "blade issue." I understand his thinking, but think that flashing is not a problem with minimal prop and audience management. On balance, I'd rate the Mogar knives higher than the Merrill knives, though, in spite of my very minor reservation about the blade. They are heavier and feel better. They also look more like real knives... probably because the are real knives. The Merrill knives look good, but the Mogar knives look great. And, yes, the textured version used by Whit Haydn is a wonderful feature; great to be able to reach into my pocket and know whether I've got a straight knife, a usual gaff, or a visual color-changing knife. Quote: And fairly expensive if you can find them. There are two versions: the original with silver-colored bolsters; a subsequent version (made in India or Pakistan, as I recall) with brass-colored bolsters. I have a four-knife set of the originals: (straight white, 2 white/Black; 1 red to white visual color changing knife). I've turned down an offer of $200.00 for the set. Occasionally, I think about putting them on eBay since I've become a Mogar knife devotee, but just can't quite bring myself to part with them. (Maybe someday...)

I use Daryl's knives. They are a bit harder to operate with, but once you get the hang of it, it isn't a problem. I really like the routine I'm using with them. One good feature of the knives, is that when you have one in the palm of your hand, you can't tell that the underside is different, from any angle. This is a plus. Also, they look like real, typical pocket knives, the kind that anyone would have.
