Lets put together a set of alternate identities for all of the playing cards.
By this I mean think up a new background story about a card until we have 52. You can link the card to a famous person/event or any other fabulous background story. I will start off with... mmmm, let me think.........5 spades. OK! The Five of Spades! Do you realise the significance of that card! Let me tell you this. About 200 years ago there was an old card player that was one of the first cheats. He was a french chap named Gerous who played cards for money all day long. He became so renowned that one time a group of well too do gentlemen requested his hand in a game of money. The 6 of them sat around a table and started a game of chance. As the game wore on gerous was winning more and more hands. It became quite ridiculous and the gents suspected some trickery was afoot. One old major lept too his feet and drew his sword, demanding that gerous stand up and show his person. Gerous refused and was cut down in an instant. The major who had taken offence was the first to see the cards hidden in the dead mans sleeve and proclaimed his actions were true. The five gents were so resolved to give the cheat an anonymous burial that the six went out into the woods, and only five gents with spades returned.

The joker: (either one)
This is the Partizan Card. It was named after the famous magician, Partizan, the Great, from the UK. He obviously has too much time on his hands. He is vying for the longest post ever created on the magic Café. Is he joking? (I liked the story, anyway).
Life is a test. It is only a test. If this had been a real life, you would have been given further instructions on where to go, and what to do.

Two boys were born in very unfortunate circustances, in third centry China. They were fraternal twins, and one was black and one was white. This of course marked the mother as an adutress and she was put to death. The father, in shame, became an opium adict and beat the boys regularly. He wanted them killed for the transgression of thier birth circumstance, but the law ordered he raise them to remind him of his wife's infidelity. To further thier misfortune, they were each born with the unfortunate defect of having only one eye. This too was balmed on the cheating parent. They grew up tough. From dad's beatings and the teasing they got in school for having only one eye.
As they grew, they became skilled fighters and soon found themselves in the employ of His Majesty Fo Tu Yu, King of all china. They guarded the king well and for years, until they were killed prtecting him by a group of usurpers. It took ten of the usurpers to get them down and Fu Tu Yu was so moved by their skill, strength, and dedication, that he declared their likeness should forever adorn a pair of playing cards. (the king was a consistant gambler) To this day we have different colored one eyed jacks.

Keep in mind, though, that kings lived in medieval times, before conveniences like electric razors. To keep his chosen look, the King of Hearts had to use his sword to trim off his moustache! That is why he's hiding his sword behind his head - because of all the razor stubble on it! Are you telling me that it's just a coincidence that all the other kings don't have any razor stubble on their weapons, are willing to show them AND have moustaches? |

Did you realise that the Jack of Clubs was actually designed too represent the the saviour of the Queen of Sheba.
The queen, known as Makeda lived in the eleventh century, She was known to be beautiful, intelligent, understanding, resourceful, and adventurous. Once she was bound to be a sacrifice to a serpent god and was rescued by a brave stranger. This stranger was known as Angaboo. And that is why they made a card in his image. The simple act of a stranger to risk his life too save a person from death. And this person too later become a great queen.

Ahhh. the Three of Diamonds, The jewel thiefs favorite card!
I know this because I know jewel thiefs. Let me tell you about Danny, this jewel thief I met back in '94. Now, I shared a room with danny for five months. This guy was always out at weird hours, he always dressed in dull clothes and never said too much. Well one time, Me and dan hit the pub after work. we get talking about all the naughty things we have done and it gets like a competition. Danny, after a few too many, tops all of my mistaminers[sp] by the revelation that he robs jewels as his main income. I was stunned for a few seconds and pushed him futher. He explained that he had a good connetion with a dealer and would go and rob too order. He told me that he always worked rich women and only took a few pieces from any gig. I humored him but thought he was spouting so much beer he must be making it up. I countered with my (fake) story about when me and stan used to tda security vehicles. Well, We got back too our room after an alcoholic detour lasting flerewl hours. and sat back for more drinks. It was then that danny shouted "av a look ere" and thumped a case onto his bed. Click, click, and he flips it open. "chek vat aaut". I look down onto a case flipping full of sparkling jems, I couldn't tell if there were hundereds or thousands of them the way they shone. I was mesmerized. He then scraped through the jems and fished out a deck of cards and held them out in front of me. Look! he says sliding the deck from the box. "pick a card son, go on pick one" he was beaming at me in a knowing way. Ok I say and pick one. three of hearts is what I pick. You remember that card son, stick it back in the deck! I do and he slaps his hands together. He lifts the deck above his head and slams it onto the table then looks at me. As he moves his hand across the table, all of the cards are now 3 of hearts!!! "No WAY" I shout, how did you do that. He never told me. That really got too me. I thought I knew how it was done but could never really say. Two years later I am sitting on the train on my way to work. I pick up the free newspaper, and four pages in I read an interesting article. It told of a thief who was caught by his modus operandi. Apparently he left a calling card at each of the jobs he had done. This MO was the Three of Hearts. Now I know how he pulled that trick.

An interesting relation between the three of diamonds, three of clubs, and the six of spades.
There were four men, who robbed a jeweler, unfortunately for them there were only three diamonds that they were able to find. three of the men then took their clubs and smote the fourth man, so that he would not claim any of the pilfered riches. But they had a body to contend with, so they took him out to a field and buried him six foot deep, with their spades. Now they could not shake the guilt of their murdered freind, so they designed those cards to asuage themselves of their crime.
Magic is doing improbable things with odd items that, under normal circumstances, would be unnessecary and quite often undesirable.

Nice try josh. Somewhat lacking in originality! but a nice combination of my stories.
please think beyond the normal and assign a card an unusual background. Example number eleventeenth. The nine of clubs is known as the diggers card! This is because it took eight men with eight spades, eight hours to dig a hole eight meters by eight, and eight feet deep! Oh, the ninth man? He made the tea
