I called a kid up from the audience for a trick the other day. He looked happy, until he got on stage. "My Daddy says this is all a fix!" he announced. I assumed he meant it was fake, and the way he phrased it made me sure it was comming from his father, or at least an adult. No kid today talks like that. I calmly said, "lets find out." and went right on with the effect. I gave the kid no room whatsoever to start a debate, and it worked well. the kid left the stage looking happy but uncertain.
It reminded me of an old Eddie Murphy joke, that I would never tell at a kids party. He was playing Santa at a dept. store, and the kid tells him, my daddy says your not really Santa Claus. Oh yeah, murphy replied, well he's not really your daddy. I was glad my response worked. At a more adult oriented group, I might have gone in a more adult direction.

No Santa Claus is real, magic is real, it was the kid's daddy who wasn't. I think the kid misunderstood, his daddy must have meant he was "fixed"
