Dear Perry,
This is a very personal matter, relating to your style and your audience. I have avoided familiar songs with titles that suggests escapes, like "Twist and Shout", "Please Release Me," and so on. This might work for a comedy presentation, which is not my style at all. Before I tell you what music I use, I should say that on each occasion that I did this escape to music, I was at a private party or on a university campus. Both types of venues have blanket exemption from paying ASCAP/BMI license fees, so I could use any music that I liked. Please be careful that you do not use copyrighted music in a venue that is not licensed for it, and be aware that videotapes that include the music cannot be commercially broadcast. Do some searching at the Café to further explore this issue. I have used The Crystal Method and My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult, specifically "Trip Like I Do" and "Radio Silicon (Silverado Remix)" from the album "Vegas" by the former group and the album "The Luna Remixes" by the latter. I will be using "Weapons of Mass Distortion" from "Legion of Boom" by The Crystal Method for a future escape. I like these because they have a fast, repetitive beat that will get the heart rates up in the audience, they have an air of menace, and because they are not familiar to very many people. Yours, Paul |

Do beware of cliché; with no offence meant to Tait, I was at a magic show this past weekend with a bill of about six different acts and heard the "Mission Impossible" theme three times and "O Fortuna" from Carmina Burana five times. Both of these are hugely overplayed, but then I guess you could argue that's because they work.
I say this, but then I admit to using "The Stripper" in my own act (albeit a specially recorded punk rock version) and (to actually answer your question) I sing a NIN-style industrial rendition of Queen's "I Want To Break Free" during my SJ escape. Corny as it may sound, it suits my modus operandi (camp with balls) and offers some nice peak moments in the song to sychronise with the more violent movements in the escape. So yeah, depends really on what your routine's going to be like. Figure that much out, keep your ears open and the perfect music will at some point present itself. You may even decide not to use music at all and to instead talk through the escape. There's a video on David Straightjacket's site of an appearance on a UK quiz show where he escaped from a SJ while delivering a timed lecture on the life of Houdini, and I would thoroughly recommend it as a masterclass on pacing and presentation. Bet he'll love me gushing over it here too, usually on these occasions he threatens to come and put abrasive substances in my knickers. What'll it be this time, Dave? |

Just don't take all of the Houdini 'facts' in the lecture for granted. Most of it is right, but I only had a limited time to write the peice, then I had to take it down from 5 minutes to 3 minutes with only an hours notice before the live broadcast. So there are a couple of factual errors in there.
Glad you like the bit Helen, I shall leave your knickers unabraded on this occasions (somehow, that sounds very very wrong)

Perry - For most of my Escapes I am on the same wavelength as Dr. Wilson here. I go with trance/Rave type music because it has a bit of mytery in it, it is beaty and gets everyone anxious. Regards Wolflock

Dr Wilson: Great music! Couldn't do a better pic myself.
Helen: And a heart without NIN is an empty one - right. Seems that EA's do have good taste in music. /Ark
