Hi Everyone, I do not know if anyone else has noticed this, but if you unseal a self sealing type envelope in the dark there is a strange puple luminescence that occurs. I don't know if the substance used could be purchases or manufactured or indeed if it would have any practical use in magic. Just a thought.

Never heard of that.....gotta go get one and try it out. If this luminesence is very visible then I would think this could work very well with a seance/prediction type of scenario.

That sounds like a piezoelectric effect. If you want to see this in a big way, get a roll of Wintergreen lifesavers. Get together with a friend whose company you enjoy in the dark. Get in a really dark room and take turns. Tell your friend to look you in the face, and crunch a Wintergreen lifesaver between your teeth with your mouth open. Your friend will see flashes of light with each crunch. Then they do it, you watch. We used to call this a "sparky party." If you don't have any friends, try this in a dark room in front of the mirror. When sugar crystals are broken, they create little flashes of dim light. Oil of wintergreen is methyl salicylate, it acts as a scintillant, amplifying the light flashes.
If you are really macho, get in a dark room with a box of sugar cubes, a flat board and a hammer. Smash a sugar cube with the hammer and see the light. Isn't science grand? Yours, Paul By the way, I didn't make that up to see if I could get you to do something weird, then laugh at you: http://www.geocities.com/RainForest/9911/tribo.htm http://rockhoundingar.com/quartz/experiments.html http://www.primitiveways.com/crystal-light2.htm http://www.imagesco.com/articles/piezo/piezo02.html http://scienceworld.wolfram.com/physics/......nce.html Yours, Paul |

If your strike quartz crystals together you get the same effect, as they are piezeo electric as well.

I've seen sparks like that between the blankets on my bed.
There's just so much static that builds up, in the dark of night if you try to separate two blankets from each other, (you wake up and you're too hot) you get those little zaps all over the place as you separate them, and in the dark they really stand out. Not really usable for an effect by itself, although static electricity sure could be.

I like the pretty blue glow from the Brehmstrahling radiation, but no one wants to be that close to it!

Hey kaytracy,
There is nothing quite like Cherenkov radiation. I had occasion (not associated with magic, sideshow, or bizarre) to work with 60,000 Curies of cobalt-60 underneath ten feet of water. If you looked down into the tank (more like a shaft, actually) you could see the blue glow coming off the plates. Since it was hard gamma radiation, they had detectors in case we lost the water, so that the people in the floors above the irradiator could get out in time. A few minutes would have been enough to, like, do them once and for all. Hard to base a card trick on this, though. Yours, Paul |

I've used the striking of two crystals to pace and lead individuals into some good magic centered upon the concept of energy flow. It's such a natural for moving into feeling energy, and to move from the feeling of energy to other physical manifestations (seeing aura...seeing changes in aura...sensing deep relaxation...sensing heightened energy...thought transfer via energy in crystal...developing a positive association involving the crystal then giving the crystal as a gift, etc. So, it seems like there should be something more that could be done with the envelope idea mentioned by Francis or with Foxfire mentioned by mentalvic. Maybe combined with Paul's information, and you might end up with a letter than was sent from some deranged scientist working on radiation experiments. Perhaps you open the letter in the dark and find that it gives off some radioactive sparks. The letter itself provides a prediction. I don't know how long foxfire will glow, but imagine having a specimin from a tree that grew on an old radioactive dumping site...etc. These are just rough ideas but I think it would be great if they could be developed into something like this.

Paul, Ah yes, I see it now, the shadow of the card "burned" onto your retinas, or other body parts, yes the blue glow from the 60Co is pretty, the one I know has 20 ft of water!

In the Steve Spangler Science catalog, there is a kit (Pg.59) to make your own chemoluminence. As in glow sticks and other things. $8.95... Magicians NEED this catalogue!

Yeah Kay that website you posted has real radioactive uranium on it! I want some but I was wondering if I really do or not
Darn, the super high radiation specimens are sold!

I was wondering more along the lines of :- If a big blob of the same glue that they use to make these envelopes was obtained, would it produce light just by kneading it in the hands?

Francis,
No, that wouldn't work. Slim has the most practical suggestion (as usual) using chemiluminescence. There is the old standby of luminous material. Foxfire will last for a day or so. But part of the charm of triboluminescence is that you can see the energy coming off the crystals, as Nicolas describes; it comes and goes, not like some raver's glow jewelry or a kid's glow-in-the-dark spider. Honestly, I've played w/ some of the scientific methods of illumination, and have found that the percent error due to unfactored conditions leads to either a much weakened or nonexistant effect. Humidity, amount of substance, time to "charge" an item, and the like, are all important factors that often are beyond our control.
That being said, a FISM Flash with fresh batteries works nearly every time and has a quick recharge. As long as it is not directly against the skin (you WILL get a heat burn with repeated use), it is also safe. It is disarming and quick. I've used it in conjunction with the opening of envelopes or boxes, and the touching of objects to enhance an effect. To allow for the effect not working, I make sure that they are not looking for a "flash of light" as the indicator for success. Instead it is just to add to the atmosphere. And for the "eerie glow," miniature battery-powered blacklights work great and are pretty cheap! Handa |

There is also the fun, at certain times of the year, and if you live near an ocean beach, when one walks along the wetsand, your footprints will light up gently for a couple inches around your feet! (poor little planktons...)
But if you take an inlander out on a moonless night, and get this to happen, they get kind of, well, lets say they jump arpund a lot if the story is a good one!! I agree, the chemical kits are fun! and easy, so short of cutting open a "glow stick" beware the little bits of the broken glass tubule from the inside, go with the kit if you want some fun glow. Most of th eglow materials from halloween do not last long once out from under the glow of the UV or other light source, (those DepU marbles are another matter) I guess it depends on what you are routining for!

Walmart sells an electric version of the glo-stick.
It looks exactly like a chemical glo-stick, the same luminescent yellow-green, but runs on watch batteries and can be turned on or off at will. I haven't taken it apart to see exactly what's inside yet, but they're only $2.
