I am new to coin magic and have bought old silver liberty half dollars still in decent shape, as well as, new silver dollars. The edges of the dollars are much easier to handle and use in various sleights, however, the older walkers seem to not be as easily gripped by my fingers. Can I get these walkers edges "filed" or "milled" for a better grip or is that a bad idea?

I'd recommend not getting the coins modified as there is a chance they will look gaffed. People handle money all the time and can often easily subconciously tell whether something is the real thing or not. Best not to raise that thought in the first place. Practice, Practice and practice and then you'll be able to use any coin anywhere.

I probably wouldn't modify the coins either... would be strange if they saw old coins with really new filed edges...
Consider using the one ounce silver eagle if you do magic with large silver coins... they are like 7-8 dollars at a coin store, can get them brand new...

I agree with kris. Grip doesn't really matter all that much as you develop your handling, and in the end, if/when you progress into more advance coin magic (which I hope you will), you'll find out that worn out coins can be to your advantage for such effects as 3fly.

can remill your coins for you and make them look perfectly normal.
