Some 15 years ago I bought "Spaceman SAM" from Supreme. It was a disaster, so I tried it a few time and I forgot it.
Today, after 15 years, I tried it again. The same "disaster". Kids told me they liked it, when I asked them after the show, but teh reaction they had at the performance was not the one I wanted. I had the feeling that it didn't go thru. Maybe the trick is not for me. May I have some comments from you? Did you find a good way to present it or it is such a "stupid" trick that it is better to forget about it... Thanks /Andrea |

I LOVE this trick! I love it love it love it. You can ask Matt I just dropped $50 on a copy of this trick about a month ago.
The first thing you should do is take the instructions and throw them away. The routine is antiquated, trite, and more than a bit stupid. I will not give you my routine because I believe it is made out of solid platinum. I think the reason it is so good is it is a topic I am very interested in. July 21, 1969 I was six years old and sitting in front of the TV on my grandfather's knee gape jawed when Neil Armstrong made those first steps on the moon. I try and sell that same level of awe and excitement wrapped in a solid science package. The routine is five minutes of gold and is the story of the THREE American astronauts who went to the moon that summer. Most people can name Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, but nobody remembers poor Michael Collins. 50 miles up watching it all happen out his very small window (Think about the sucker ending and this third astronaut). I won't even go into where the moon man on the back of the space ship comes in but they picked up a lot of rocks off the moon that summer (and one stow away!) Like anything, it ain't the trick, it is the routine. But, if it isn't the kind of thing that excites you, it won't excite the kids. That is what I find anyway. So, if you hate it I'll be happy to take it off your hands as a back up for $20 U.S. Best, Dan- "MT is one of the reasons we started this board! Dan,
I live in Sweden. There is an ocean between us.. I don’t think I will ever be you competitor… you can always change your mind and let me know your routine… maybe just by e-mail.. That I would really appreciate. I have anyway appreciated your message, and actually I wrote this post because I could intuit that Spaceman Sam has a potential (colors and pictures are nice!), but I am not able to pull it out of it… let’s say I’m not able to see Spaceman Sam from another perspective. When I performed it, as soon as I showed the spaceship and the astronaut, one kid shouted “he is Neil Armstrong!” I realized this just after reading your mail, so I am quite sure that you routine is good.. Where I would like to have help is in the “psychological” stance of the performer towards the kids: I don’t like to let them believe they got me and than fool them at the end. This is frustrating for them. If they are fooled, I also want to be fooled, at least at their eyes. Dan, you cannot ask me to sell you *any* of my magic props. They are more than platinum for me, so I cannot separate from them, even for money and even if I don’t use them. I have dedicated a long part of my life in studying magic, and every prop remembers me that period of dedication and enthusiasm. So I am sorry, I cannot give you Spaceman SAM. I am sure you understand it… My regards /Andrea |

Andrea,
I would not part with my original routine for all the money in the world. It has nothing to do with competition. It is something very personal to me. I think you missed the point of my message that if the prop interests you, you could write your own routine very easily by studying the NASA space program of the 1960's. Particularly Apollo 11. Knowing the true story will allow you to write an interesting fictionalized one that will still contain very educational information. But, if you have no personal investment in the prop it will always only play as a couple of pieces of cardboard with a flap. This is the thing that separates us as performers, the personal bits of ourselves, and our interests, that we bring to the show. There are a lot of tricks that just do not "click" for me because I have no personal interest in them. I then see other performers turn them into something great because of what they bring to it. I rarely think that I could get the same thing out of it that someone who is connected to the trick can. the difference is personal interest.
