Thanks a lot Rik and to everyone else who has added something to help a fellow magician. I am still taking suggestions and small routines. I figuered(well not me but another magician)suggested that if there are 3 tables of 10 I could perform 20 minute sets at each table, and if it is one whole table I can break the table up into small groups of 5-7 people, so that is where I am headed.
I don't know if you mentioned whether they'll be eating while you're performing, or not. In any case, I suggest doing maybe 30 minutes stand-up for everyone, then circulate to do some close-up. This also gives you time to relax so you won't be as nervous for the close-up. If they want a formal parlour show for an hour, it'll go faster than you think. I use Sammy Smith's Egg Bag routine for all audiences and it goes over well. I also suggest simple things, like C&R rope or 3 ropes and a baby, maybe Thumbcuffs or the ovar bar w/chains escape (very easy and comedic). Throw in a die box, sponge ball routine, maybe a larger card trick (any Travellers is good), Insurance Policy is easy and gets laughs. Go for simple and funny. Also, I suggest using a do-as-I-do type Mouth Coil or Hat Tear for the communion boy -- it involves him, it's funny, and he gets something after. If you're doing walkaround, the same rope, sponge balls, and some smaller card stuff will work well. An hour really isn't much. Good luck!

I don't have any advice to add, but I want to wish you good luck with the show, and say that I think "the magician is really an undercover cop" is one of the coolest things I have ever heard of.

Magic Sam,, Great advise, thank you. I have seen and heard of insurance policy b4 I just forget it..., I remember it being funny, I will look into it, thanks for the mention. I will also look into Sammy Smiths egg bag routine, Which dvd is it on? johnjack.
Hey Geoff, Thanks for the luck I'll bring it with me to the show and use it at the beginning , middle and the end. People do find it preety cool when I take their wallet and watch only to find out that I am a cop. It was a great cover up, but eventually the regulars found out through the owner and then I just became the undercover cop that does magic, rather than the magician who is also a cop. |
