What is the best coins across for strolling magic? I perform the Roth version with a shell, keeping in mind your hands sweat when performing.

I actually learned my coins across from Jay Sankey, which uses the Chin Pein Han technique. It doesn't use any gaffs or shells, but only 4 coins.. It actually took me like 2 months to even get the moves down correctly, but once they're set, it looks VERY nice. It is a very fast pace trick though. Not a lot of patter, just coins visually jumping from one hand to another. I'd tell you how it works, but I don't know the rules on the forum as to how far I can go into detail....

You'll get many different answers to your question because I would suspect that each performer finds their routine the best for them. For me, the Coins Across routine I do uses 4 silver dollars and no gaffs. I often do mine surrounded and I probably perform this effect more often than any other coin effect. It's called "Boomerang Coins" and is explained in detail in my new book due out very soon. If you want to use a gaff (s----) I think "Familiar Ring" in Paul Gertner's book is great.

The answer to your question is simple...the best coins across is the one YOU are most comfortable performing with! If the Roth routine you do plays well for you and you are comfortable with it... you already have the best.

S2000, Jay has a method called Chien Ping Han which is a backwards version of the traditional move...

Wsduncan: Thanks! As is painfully obvious, I wasn't aware of that.
At least I got the spelling correct, if not the word order. (I'll have to ponder what a backwards Han Ping Chien could be.) |

I agree with Mike Gallo. The best coins across is the one you are comfortable with.
I perform various coins across with either 3 or 4 coins, preferrably Kennedy Halves. My 4 coins across is based on David Stone's Star Travel. It uses 4 coins and no gaffs. The other one I use requires only 3 coins and no gaffs. I call it In A Snap coins across and it is based on Apollo Robbins' Trapeze Trio. It uses only simple sleights like a steal, some palms and a flying han pien chan (I only saw Apollo Robbins use this move). All these coins across are done standup, no table required.

I've always loved 3/4 across, since it gets great reactions. Also, I like performing Winged silver, gets good reactions as well since the specs SEE the coins in your hands, count them, but still... When sitting I like Al Schneider's coins across (I love this pop-up move, leaves audience clueless)...
A couple of weeks ago I bought Dan's Coinvanish vol.2, and I have performed his coins across although I first felt awkward with placing it in the specs' hands. But never got busted so far, and gets great reactions. That was a great idea Dan; I was myself doing something a bit similar (with the coins on their hands), but using an extra coin. Your routine leaves me clean. When are you releasing Coinvanish vol.3 ?

I think the best Coins Across is the one performed by Sylvester using his Pitch. It's a beautiful thing to watch motored by a beautiful move behind it. It's not mentioned here but check it out and you'll see something absolutely magical in his presentation of it. I've seen many of the others, all nice to be sure, but Sylvester's is the coolest I've seen. A lot of energy, creativity and skill.

I have a few coins across routines as this is my favourite effect,in a stand up situation I tend to perform my variation of jay sankeys mr clean coins across, when I'm table hopping at the moment I'm performing my variation of daryls 3 fly 111 and I also perform my own variation of flying eagles although not as regular now as the first two versions I've just mentioned.
I think the key factor is it all depends what the situation is. |

Sankey's Mr. Clean Coins Across witch is taught on a bunch of his dvds. And Gregory Wilsons 3/4 across, from On The Spot. Both are extremenly similar.

Don't you think a series of pointing transfers would look suspicious? just wondering.

And don't over-do the Ramsey subtlety as well, it can be a dead giveaway - especially if you perform for magicians - but also for layman. I'm familiar with the pitch, I use it performing Gregory Wilsons "Toll Free", but I haven't stumbled across SYlvesters coins across. Can somebody describe the routine and where to find it? Is it 3 coins, 4 coins, jumping back and forth?? Or? I'm personally performing the following 4 coins across routines, but always looking to improve. 1) Above, beside below (Paul Greens version of Larry Jennings routine with coins across from the magicians to the spectators hands) 2) Jay Sankey's Mr. Clean Coins across or Gregorys 3/4 - but I don't like the last coin transfer. 3) My variation of Daryls and Kenners 3 fly's/menage a trois. Daryls' beginning and Kenners ending. However I start clean with 3 coins and sleeve the 4th, and I end clean by topitting the 4th coin. 4) Gregory Wilsons Toll Free, which in itself is not a coins across, but more like a mulitiplying coins routine and a vanish. My favorite that I do 4 coin with No gaff version by Dean Dill. I like it because it is easy to do, clean from start to finish. It ends with the extra coin being added to the spectators hand.
One which I enjoy watching (and should probably work on) is a Winged Silver style coins accross by Tommy Wonder. He uses a Boston Box, 3 of the same type of coin, and 1 different. His presentation is so engaging and his use of misdirection is suburb. It is very entertaining. I would also be interested in any sources for the Sylvester version, it sounds interesting.
Magic is fun!!!

Without getting into detail on my routine... I would suggest asking yourself the following questions:
1. Why does a coins across using a ] look so clean? 2. What purpose does the ] serve? Does it help to make coins vanish or appear... or both? 3. What would happen if you could use a ] for both vanishes and appearances simultaneously in both the right and left hands? 4. How can you clean up a ] or ]'s at the end? Thesse were the 4 questions that rolled around with while coming up with my "Amalgamated Steal" coins across routine. Once I had the answers... I had a heck of a nice routine
