I knew J.B. Bobo fairly well. He was a real gentleman, and a fine magician. He really knew how to sell his book.
Granted, much of the material in Modern Coin Magic is dated, but in the proper hands it can still fool the pants off of people. But at the time it came out, there was nothing else like it in the history of magic. His hands were very large, and they had a hollow space in the palm that would accomodate a large hen's egg. Once, David Bendix told me that someone had said that Bobo could palm a watermelon. When David was first introduced to him, he stared at Bobo's hands. J.B. asked him what he was staring at. David said, "Someone told me your hands were large enough that you could palm a watermelon. They weren't far off!" His ethics were beyond reproach.

My first contact with Bobo was in the second grade when he did a magic show at my elementary school. When I later lived in a town fairly near Texarkana, I managed to meet him again as an adult and a magician. I'd agree, he could palm a watermelon. Very instructive and very encouraging, plus a fine entertainer.

I've actually wanted to know more about him since I read New Modern Coin Magic. It's amazing how much increadible thoughts are in that book. Is there a site in the net where I can learn more about him? I haven't found not even a picture of him in person...

Guys need to read the "Bobo Magic Show" to understand how he worked. There are some great.simple but strong routines, in it. Modern Coin Magic was a great leader in coin magic that he complied while he was on the road working.

I performed at the 1990 IBM convention in St. Louis and Bobo was on one of the afternoon shows at the Kiel Opera House. It was the show of "Magic Classics" hosted by Roger Crabtree. Harry Blackstone Jr. was also on the show and did the Lightbulb. Bobo did Jimmy Stoppard's Coin routine (it's in Modern Coin Magic.) It was a hot, muggy, July day and after the show, I was driving back to the hotel in my air-conditioned rental car and saw Bobo lugging his suitcase of magic down the street toward the hotel. I pulled over and offered him a ride. He thanked me profusely, but I told him it was an honor to give him a ride. (I still wonder why the IBM had not arranged transportation for him!) He was well in his 80's at the time, it seemed, and he died a couple of years later.
A REAL gentleman of the old school! And I'm still proud to say, "I was Bobo's chauffeur." |

I met Bobo nearly three decades ago at the Cavalcade of Magic in Eureka Springs, Arkansas. Bill Pitts, International President of IBM (1979?) had him in tow. He was indeed quite a gentleman, tall, alert, and friendly. Later I got to know him better and found that he was almost shy. I never saw him rushed for time, too busy to shake a hand, or have a critical word about anyone. He monopolized listening.
And Bill was right. I bet he could palm a watermelon! Bob Sanders Magic By Sander |

When I was in grade school in a small community near the Blue Ridge Mountains in rural Virginia, we had a magician at our assembly program. It was the first magician I ever saw. I was absolutely entralled by the proformance given by he and his wife. Little did I realize that I had been introduced to a discipline I would pursue the rest of my life. I was lucky enough to get selected when he asked for volunteers to help him carry props to his trailer after his show. I asked him how one can learn about magic. He suggested looking in Popular Mechanics for the ad from a place called Douglas Magicland and told me they would send me a catalog for the grand sum of ten cents! He recommended books on magic as a good way to start and opened the trunk to his car which was filled with copies of a book which he said he had just written, but that it was too advanced for someone just beginning. I can still see that trunk full of Bobo's Modern Coin Magic just as clearly as I did on that day in 1952.

If anyone thinks Modern Coin magic is outdated. . .
In the late 80's I was in Albany, Oregon and called Jerry Andrus (who I did not know at all) just to say hello. He invited me over, took me in hand, spent a bunch of time showing me magic, chatting and so on. A great guy. But here's the tie-in with Bobo: I was terribly self-conscious doing any magic in front of Jerry, but I did one trick. It was a coin trick I learned from the Bobo book. It actually fooled Jerry Andrus. Not for long--just a second or two, but he did have an immediate reaction of "Huh?," which to me is as good as it gets. I'm glad to hear Bobo was a fine a gentleman as he was a magician. The man who taught me magic gave me his copy of Bobo. It's a first edition and I confess I've used it so much, I didn't treat it like an artifact. I much prefer that, though. |
