I've been doing ink to goldfish for a while, and just ordered Artistic Fish from Hank Lee. I've read old threads here on all sorts of fish productions. I see that Fishtastic got some pretty poor reviews, since the method often keeps the fish from doing their job when it's time.
Are there any other large fish productions on the market, or described in books? I'm not looking for a whole aquarium production - I like the empty aquarium to start. I'm concerned that to do what I want to do, the Fishtastic method is ultimately the only option, and if it's proving to be problematic, I may just abandon this idea. |

Arial Fishing is the only large fish production I know of. This can be purchased from Owen's if you want the fishing pole method as discribed in John Booth's book 'The John Booth Classics', this was a Supreme Magic publication that contains all 3 of his previously published works. This is old material when John Booth was a magician. He then became a minister and is a magic writer and write for Linking Ring Magazine.
The other method is the Stull fish bowl, not currently available from a dealer to my knowledge. Gem Products made the last high quality product. P&L made an aquarium production. The rectangle aquarium made several fish appear in a take full of water. It was even featured in an old movie back in the 1940's or 50's. Gen Grant, the founder of Mak-Magic, sold a transposition effect with goldfish. Sort of a passe effect with fish. |

We had a guest performer at our magic club's annual picnic who did an Arial Fishing one year. I believe the version he used produced 4 goldfish. It was kinda funny to see all the young guys in the club with their high tech gizmos scratching their heads at an effect over a hundred years old. One wonders how many classic effects have been lost like this over time.

On one of the Penn & Teller sin city spectacular episodes from a while back, there was a segment they did themed around fishing. The focus was an empty fish tank roughly 1x1x2.5 or so feet. Teller at one point reaches into the tank with his two empty hands, and sort of scoops up a handful of water, which he raises just a bit above the water, then procedes to open his hands. Upon opening them, a bunch of live goldfish now fall from his open hands. He repeated this a few times until the prior empty tank was now filled with live goldfish. It was a beautiful thing to see. Extremely magical in appearance. I don't know if this idea was original with them or not, but it sounds like something you would be interested in. Perhaps you could find an old copy of the episode to see this.

The Chinese acrobatics do the best arial fishing routine I've ever seen. I saw this famous act peformed by a former member of the Nanjing acrobatic troupe in San Francisco. Many of may consider this act very cruel but I found it captivating. The last part is spectacular where the performer produces a LIVE (one foot) flapping fish/carp on the end of a fishing pole. I'm sure many audiences would object to seeing something like this live.

My friends and I saw this act at the 1st Hong Kong International Magic Convention way back 1999, where a chinese lady magician did the aerial fishing routine, she produced an enormous fish (it was thiiisss... BIG )only to find out it was dead when she placed it in the tank, (it was floating, as in dead floating) which left her no choice but to cook it instead. so she got a chopping board and chopped it in half, and when she threw it back in the water it came back to life. TRUE!!! LOL!
PERFORM MAGIC AND NOT "PUZZLES" so the audience wont try to "figure out how its done".

I hope to have the Stull type bowl back on the market next year. I have just been too busy to get the prototype made. I may also make a pole version to work with it or separately.
There was an old trick (I think in a Dunniger book) kind of hair brained but it vanished the goldfish in a bowl. It used a hair net that pulled down over the fish. Maybe it could work in reverse. I've got a couple other ideas if you want to pm me. Richard

I noticed that Ron Allesi has one of the P&L aquariums for sale.

The P&L aquarium will only produce one or two fish. It is not very big . I have also found, though very neat in principle, the fish don't want to come up out the load area when released. So you are still standing there with an empty box. The only way to get the fish visible and swimming is to drop them into the box.
I am going tomorrow to get the bowls so I can get this project going. Richard

Hmm, probably more useful as a P&L collector's piece then. haha.
Great to hear someone is putting the pole back into production again. I wish I could remember the name of the fellow I saw perform the Aerial Fishing. He was an Ohio-ian. I'm starting to think that Ohio is the magic capital of the world, not Vegas or Colon... at least as far as magic history goes. You have Klosterman, Sheppard, Allesi, Kenna Thompson, and Mr. Hughes there, just to name a few. Cris |

There have been more professional magicians, magic manufacturers from Ohio than any other state. Not to mention the founding of the first magic convention and the IBM by W.W. Durbin.
It really is amazing how many people have roots to Ohio in magic. Richard

There's a few notables in magic from my hometown, Louisville, as well. Harry Collins, Bob Escher, Lance Burton, Mac King. Some of you might've heard of 'em . ;-)

I was in Cave Hill Cemetery last week to visit the grave of Claude Thurman, who was a dear friend of mine (his rabbit and two of his doves still perform in my show). I noticed that his grave is pretty much right between the graves of Harry Collins and Colonel Sanders. Very appropiate... Claude loved his magic and he loved his food.

This is great. I may go to Ohio this November for a business trip with a coworker. I planned to extend my stay there to visit the place but a friend of mine told me that do not stay too long since it's a very boring state and nothing there to see. Now I know many magicians are there. Can someone give me some suggestions of what to see and where to visit in Ohio please? My co-worker is not a magician but she is interest in magic show too so she probably will tag along with me. Thank you for any input.
